We started school this week, my daughter is 4 1/2 and she is so excited to be learning. We read a story from “winnie the pooh” and I asked her “what happened in the story?” and she was ok telling me on day 1 and day 2 but now she just says “mom we dont have to talk about it”. Should I not ask her to tell me anymore? am I asking too much? I just want to make sure she is paying attention.
Agree with both posters. Let her tell you something occasionally if she likes, let her tell Daddy about it, don’t force it. Have you yet read the first volume of CM’s writings? It would be a help. There are things you can do to strengthen her ability to pay attention, even now, if you keep it light and game-like. Like take a walk outdoors, and stop and ask her to “take a picture” and tell you what she sees. But even this should be occasional, not a rigid do-it-every-day. Read to her and take her outside. Lots. If you are concerned about attention, watch her carefully as you read. When her attention begins to wander, stop for now and try again later. Don’t let her get in a habit of daydreaming while you are reading for long periods. You are doing great. Don’t push at this age. PLENTY of time for more formal work later. You are building good memories and habits now.
Thank you so much ladies for the advice! I only read about a page from books that simply charlotte mason recommended and I ask her “what do you like from the book? tell me about it?” today we read a pumpkin book and she told me almost every detail about it without hesitation, so maybe its the book that I am reading, shes more interested in some than others. We finish school by 9:30-10:00 a.m so we go outside for the rest of the day, take nature walks, go to the park, paint outside, etc. I do want her to learn to pay attention, and some days “before we started school this week” Daddy would ask her “what did you do today?” and she would say “oh I dont remember”. So I was getting frustrated that she wouldnt say anything.
