Just thinking about how important it is to have a quick recap before reading aloud each day to help everyone focus. This began a wondering about independent reading. When I assign my child a selection to read on her own, should I remind her to think first about what she read last time? I am usually working with another child when she begins her independent work. Just wondering what y’all do. Perhaps she does this automatically because we do it together whenever we read together. I should ask her! She reads quite a bit outside of school time as well.

I’m not sure why I titled that “narration.”. I think I was reading about the recap last night in the narration series on the SCM blog! 🙂

It’s very helpful to acquire that habit of taking just a moment to recall where you are in the story before starting in to the next bit. I like your idea about asking her. If she is, tell her why you’re glad; if she isn’t, tell her why it’s such a great habit.
