Just wanted to share something that happened today – maybe it will work for one of you too! My dd is only 5 so we don’t do narration yet per CM recommendations…but, today while we were doing some “school” she had a little doll with her. I told her she could teach her doll as we went. So, I read and she then narrated to her doll (although of course she didn’t know she was narrating). Anyway, it worked so well! I have tried in the past to bring up narration, just to see and she didn’t really get it. Having to teach it to her doll made sense to her, I guess! Anyway, just wanted to put that out there!
That *is* a great idea! My 6yo, who has trouble narrating, always has her big giant caterpillar (stuffed animal LOL) along with her. She *loves* to pretend the bug is real and does silly things. This might really help her focus more. Thanks for the idea!
A terrific idea, indeed! I have another that came from my 11yo autistic son. He insists he cannot narrate, does not remember anything, etc. etc., then he ends up narrating with more detail than his sister. Since he likes to use funny voices to make his stuffed animals “talk,” sometimes I ask him to have “Croak” or “Little Joe” narrate. Then he holds up the animal and narrates in the funny voice. It’s fun for everyone, and it usually works very well.
Those are great ideas! Here is another idea( maybe for when the kids are abit older) that helped us: We bought a simple tape recorder and my kids made a radio show out of their history narrations. I only have two and they would take turns being the announcer and the other one would tell the history story of the day. The plus side of all this was we could give the tape to Dad to listen to in his truck. He is a driver. He found it to be a very precious tape after we gave it to him.
My 7yr. old daughter likes to have her stuffed puppy “tell” me her narration. She changes her voice and everything to sound like Bingo the puppy. Bingo is very good at this narration thing ;).
Excellent idea!! I posted today about this issue with my 6.5 year old. She always has one of her “babies” sitting with us during school. Going to try this tomorrow!
