I spent 7 hours cleaning, REALLY cleaning, the kitchen on Sunday. It is still organized and shiny! Hooray! 🙂 Next up is the schoolroom. It’s FREEZING in there in the winter, so instead of being used for it’s intended purpose, it’s become a “holding area” for things I don’t want to see. Eek! Less is more! lLess is more! Less is more! (Haven’t I seen that on a poster somewhere? hmmmm….. )
Speaking of posters, we have decorated the door in the kitchen with a poster saying “Happy habits make a happy home,” with smaller posters underneath reminding us of the habits that we have worked on/are working on.
Yes, I agree, this is one I would LOVE to have a DVD copy of! I went to an outdoor school/camp one time in my highschool years and they had a mascot, Less Ismore. One of the things they really taught, was not to take more on your plate at meal times than you could eat. At the end of each meal they scraped all leftovers into one bin, to show how much waste it actually was for the whole camp. One night after dinner, one of the girls, with great cheers and encouragement from us, ate the whole camp’s leftovers from the bucket so that there’d be no waste, lol. Anyway, that was way off topic, but I always think of that when I hear “Less is more!”
Yes, please get that one on DVD. Because it makes sense for us to ask you to do more while teaching us to do less! This sounds so wonderfully encouraging though. I’m really excited for all the new workshops SCM is doing. Keep up the good work.
Oh Triscuit! I am so happy for you! And I love the poster idea too — did you just make those up yourself, or did you find something like that?
I have been trying to regroup and reevaluate since the conference, but am struggling to find time to quietly think and when I do then I struggle to keep my thoughts focused long enough to accomplish anything. But I love hearing what you are doing — it’s inspiring! Would love to hear details, too! 🙂
Mysterious Lady in Pink, here are some of the details on what I did:
I have several plastic drawer thingamajigs in the kitchen that hold art supplies…on top I had a small box containing paper. Well, the box has never been big enough, and paper is generall falling out onto the floor. SO, I put it in a bigger box. I was waiting to get a “nice, pretty” box, but you know what, a (colorful!) tuna box from Aldi works perfectly!
I had tons of clothes (clean and folded) piled up and toppling over all over the kitchen. I *PUT THEM AWAY*. This has freed me, because I always felt like those clothes piles were yelling at me when I saw them. Now, my sideboard is cleared off and decoarted with a tea set, a jar of my grandmother’s knitting needles, a plant, a globe, and some books. It’s a happy place again!
My daughter has a small desk in the kitchen where she has her sewing machine and supplies. I found her a big, lidded box to keep the fabric in (so the dog, who is actually named Triscuit) will not steal the fabric. We put all of the supplies in the desk and wiped off the desk. She is now free to create. 🙂
On the other side of the kitchen, we have more plastic drawer, art-supply-holding thingamajigs. I tidied up that area and then noticed how the tops of the thingamajigs are strangely-textured black surfaces that ALWAYS look terribly dusty, even when I have just cleaned them. So, I put a small, folded blanket on top of them and now they look cozy. 🙂
I wiped down the pantry doors with water and baking soda, as they were looking horrid. (The INSIDE of the pantry will be another day )
Our centerpiece was no longer working…because, ya know, Christmas was actually MONTHS ago!…so I helped the kiddos make a tissue-paper-flower and Easter basket centerpiece. Welcome spring! 🙂
I swept and mopped really well and wiped the front of the fridge and cabinets and dishwasher.
I made the “habit” posters myself – nothing special – not even made on the computer! My kids were actually telling someone about them, and it was really sweet to hear. On the other hand, I reminded someone to “speak sweetly” and they responded that “speak sweetly” doesn’t get hung up ’till next week. Aye, we can’t win them all, I suppose!
I scrubbed the windows, window sills, sink, stove, and trashcan.
In the hallway that connects to the kitchen (it’s kindof a room/kindof a hallway), I did more of the same. We have a giant Lego table in there, so I had the kids tidy that up and I got rid of Lego set boxes and things that we no longer need. There is a tall – eye-levelish – table in there where I kind of throw stuff when I find it laying where it shouldnt’: left out a hat – I throw it up there, stray markers – thrown up there, books, games, stuffed animals etc – if they are laying around, they generally get thrown up there (yes, bad mama habit, I know.) I cleared off the whole thing, and now the kiddos have nicely displayed all of the “big” lego things that they have put together that they want to keep together. 🙂 More room for them to play instead of having big sets taking up space, AND I am not tempted to put anything up there because now that space has a purpose (AND I might break a treasured creation if I just randomly fling something up there)!
NOW, all this to say that I have some health issues and can’t be doing this all the time. And in a perfect situation, the kids would be helping me – instead of just thinking “mom’s on a roll, get out of the way!” But, I feel so much better coming into to the kitchen and seeing it look nice. Full disclosure: now that I’m not folding laundry in the kitchen, the clean laundry is all being stored……….in the spare bathroom bathtub. If you are still my friends after reading that, then may God bless you beyond your wildest dreams. LOL
This post is full of spelling and grammatical errors – sorry! I’m in a super hurry but wanted to satisfy MLIP’s curiosity!
lol — I love the ending your post, Triscuit! Seriously made me laugh out loud. Now you’re all the more endearing. 😉 I so appreciate hearing details; thank you for sharing all that! And it was all very real, very relatable.
The habits posters sound so cute! I love that your kids were telling someone about them too. I think the visual would *really* help me in terms of keeping the chosen habit more in my mind. Do you plan to rotate a new habit posted, taking down the old habit, so there are always/only 2 habits posted at a time? Actually, I just reread how you first described it. Not sure if that’s what you meant — I was picturing each habit having a small (half sheet of paper?) poster for itself. Anyway, I like the idea of posting them in a pleasant way.

Love it, love it, love it!!! =) You made me laugh out loud too!
I really like the idea of the habit posters too. It would help my children remember why I am “on a roll” to use your words. I’m not worried about the “fancy print” issue – I would just love to see a photo if you get a chance to email me or MLIP. =)
