<p style=”text-align: left;”>I am using ECC also. I like focusing on missions and geography this year but we did read a few American history books as part of read aloud time. I add in more literature because we love to read and I like that we have time to add more. I am also adding in extra info. From Apologia zoology 3. So as we study different continents and ecosystems, we also look at those animals. We also look them up on arkive.org.</p>
Mfw ECC is meant to be multi level. My kids are age 9 down to 4 months so I use the science as a reference for me and a guide for what to cover. My 9 year old loves science and wanted more than just living science books, so using the text book, videos, living books, experiments together works well for him. I would add in anything that interests your child. My son loves airplanes so we have the space to add in a study about airplanes and we incorporate that into our study of geography and missions. Maybe you could ask your kids what interests them and add that in?
We are also doing ECC this year. Something I like to do is get a short intro to the different languages spoken as our. I use Mango Languages (https://mangolanguages.com/index.html). It is free from the library where I live. I do not expect long term retention of it. Just to get an ear for other languages.
The read alouds scheduled are such a wonderful part of the program, not to be missed! Hearing about the missionaries gives a unique love of the country.
We also will listen to classical composers from that country. Again, the goal is just a broad overview. We are in Germany and when they heard that Handel was from there, there was a connection! Their eyes lit up when they realized it. We had done a brief intro to Handel before this point for another reason.
I use songs to help memorize the countries and it makes the geography game less daunting and more enjoyable for us.
Some days are hard. Sometimes I want to quit. But overall, we are so pleased with our broad study of other countries!
