Greetings ! I have discovered CM this spring and it has been sooooo enlightening . It has been exactly what I have been looking for. We have kinda gone about it backwards in that we did not start with narration or living books. My kids love being outside so the first thing we began to incorporate was nature walks / nature study. Then I started doing a picture study once a week with them. I would now like to work on adding narration & living books. I have 2 kids , 5 and almost 7. I am wrapping up my 2nd year of homeschooling.
So here is my question – A friend has given me an entire year of My Father’s world curriculum for next school year. I was going to use that for History, Geography & Bible. I know that My father’s world is a combo of CM , Classical and unit study and I guess that Charlotte wasn’t to keen on unit studies? I am just wanting to know if anyone here has tried to combine parts of MFW with aspects of CM ? It doesn’t appear that the two of them would clash but I just want to make sure (before finding out during the school year ). The idea of being able to use something that was free sounds great .
And on a side note I really think it would be fun to pick out some handicrafts and projects to do next school year with the kids. Is this sounding too ambitious ? Maybe I could work on the narration part over the summer with literature selections so I am not trying to incorporate too much at one time?
I would love your thoughts, ideas & advice. Thanks !
I agree. In the two years I used it, I liked that MFW gave us all kinds of activities to choose from but it never felt like a unit study. We tried an eclectic approach this year and I was less than happy with it; we’ll be going back to MFW in the fall!
Also, I just have to comment that if your children are not used to narrating, it may take them longer than a summer to develop this skill. It took my son over two years to get good at it; but then I was having to de-school him from the public school system.
I don’t think you sound too ambitious. I usually over-plan and if we don’t get to everything then it’s not a big deal but at least I have some ideas to pull from on a rainy or “I’m bored” day!
I have strongly considered MFW, and the only reason I didn’t choose it fully is because I like to plan myself. I do have MFW K for dd 5 next year, and plan for ds, about to be 7, to join in the Bible, activities, and beef up the science to his level. I think it will be easy to add in your own composer study, picture study, poetry, handicrafts, and such following MFW curriculum. If you find you like following a more pure CM curriculum, I would think it would still make use of the MFW materials by gleaning from their manual and including the materials they provide into your own daily plan. I think MFW plans nature study in their guides. If for some reason I didn’t have the time and energy to piece meal my own curriculum I would use MFW. I am using many SCM suggestions for my oldest right now, but if I was given a year of MFW, I would use it instead for that year.
I am planning to use MFW ECC next year because I don’t have the time to plan my own. It is the best I’ve found for what I want, even if it’s not perfect.
I am using MFW for my 3rd child and will definitly use it for my 4th. We almost finished K and already ordered 1st grade. I am doing something else w/my older kids though. I had spent so much time planning w/the older ones that I needed a break from that when I started the younger ones and it turned out great for us!
Thank you so much ! I have more peace now about progressing forward with my plans. MFW looks like a lot of fun & I am learning so much about CM as well. I look forward to this next school year :).
I will def. be posting more questions on this forum . Everyone seems so helpful & pleasant.
