For those of you who have used MFW, is it worth the money for gradeK?
I know only one person who has been using it but she said the math was not good so she is using another program for that and the 100 easy leassons for reading.
It looks like a nice program, I don’t think I’ll have much time to plan the way this is all planned out but would like some feed back.
Here’s a recent thread: http://simplycharlottemason.com/scmforum/topic/cm-or-my-fathers-world-i-need-to-decide. I’ve never used it, but was contemplating a bit. It would be nice to have something all put together, but for me I know I’d tweak too much to be worth the $$:) I like pulling resources from different CM sites and I organize it by using SCM’s “Planning Your CM Education.” Hope you find what works well for your family:) Gina
We are using Adventures this year and we are enjoying the program, I bought ours TM used and we had most of the books already. So, the year was not that exspensive, but I don’t think i’m going to buy the next program.
I briefly used MFW K when my youngest was in kindergarten. We did not have a good experience–he ran through everything in two months, and he was only spending a very short time per day. He took off with reading after he learned some of the letters and short vowel words and had little to do after that, so then I had to go dream up something else to do. 🙂
We used MFW K for our younger son and didn’t have a positive experience. I found it to be a lot of busy work, which he hated. He did not learn to read, as a matter of fact, this year for 1st grade, he didn’t remember most of the sounds so we had to start over. I would not recommend MFW K. It’s not worth the money. Basically, every 6 days, you focus on a different letter of the alphabet by doing projects and misc. reading. I think you could easily make up your own program if that’s the method you’re interested in. You would need access to a good library to order the weekly books. Some of the book recommendations are good and some are twaddle. We used Math-U-See instead of the MFW math, so I can’t speak to that.
If you do decide to go with it, I would definitely recommend buying used. There are several on E-bay or there’s a MFW Yahoo group that swaps MFW curriculum.
Thank you so much for the feedbacks! It does not sound as great as I thought although the fact that my friend had to add so many things made me doubtful.
I was looking for a way to avoid anymore planning as I have been doing a lot of research and planning for gradeK but also my older kids. Sometimes to get something all planned out seems like an easy way out. Not always so, I also experienced w/Winter’s promise this year not using a lot of the planned activities and modifying a lot.
Anyway, I might go with Delightful reading and either Math u see or Queens math.
I don’t really know what else.
I got a lot of good suggestions on this site so I’ll go back to that…
For K, you really don’t need a lot – especially when teaching older kids… really you don’t even need to do anything until they are about age 6… but if doing something….
Devotion – join in with family
Reading – Delightful reading sounds good…, then pick some of the preschool read-alouds.
Math – I like RightStart – but if you are doing another program with your older kids, whatever K level of math they have would surely be fine…
Writing – you might want to start something like Penny Gardner’s Italic Handwriting – or some other program like handwriting without tears, or something.
And then join in on Picture Study/Nature Study, etc with family as desired.
