I have started my daughter this summer on the History of the Horse guide from Beautiful Feet books.  She loves horses and reading horse stories.  She says that she doesn’t want to do the additional activities in the guide.  She’d rather devour the books quickly.  I was hoping to use this as a way to help her slow down and really digest books.  She can read through several books a day if she wants.  (She is 9 years old).

I’m wondering if this is an issue that I should have her do as a duty in schoolwork or let her just read through the books and use narration for them?  If the latter, how can I teach her to move through a book slowly so she’ll absorb more information?  I really want her to love learning but I know this doesn’t mean that everything has to be “fun”.

I would just let her read through the book but have her narrate every few pages or so. My kids balk at having to do “enrichment” exercises when they really like the book. It sometimes sucks the fun out of it. If she is narrating very well every few pages then I would let well enough alone. I say a few pages only because that does force my kids to slow down and really pay attention and yet doesn’t stifle their interest.

IMHO there are days enough when the books to be read will not be all that interesting to the child and then, I guess, it is a good time to “buckle down”. If she enjoys horses I wouldn’t push her to make it “work”.
