JeaninPa, I can relate! This is only my 4th year of HSing, but the 2nd year I added a new child, who happened to be 10 and knew no English. Then I had another year with 5, including two kindies. That was last year. So this year, I’m really trying to be more organized, especially on scheduling individual time.
I figured realistically 30 minutes with each of our DC, but I schedule it throughout the day. I schedule it with the youngers on up through the older, 3 are in the AM and 3 after lunch (olders after lunch).
It is amazing what you can do for half an hour with just ONE child, especially with no interruptions. I also have our 2YO DD down for a nap in the afternoon when I have the older 3 scheduled for their half hour time blocks with me.
In the AM, I will have one of them making sure DD, 2, is occupied safely. Sometimes they don’t have to do anything other than have her in their view (maybe while reading or in the schoolroom and she is occupied at table time), but anyway, key is having that 30 minutes be uninterrupted.
I too try to focus that individual time on math and LA as all of ours are at different levels on that. Biggest struggle so far is that I would like our older 3 to take some of the responsibility and come to me at their scheduled time. Still working on that, but I made myself a schedule and the children too so this is helping. It is in 30 minute or more time increments.
Thank you all for your kind replies and encouragement. It was, perhaps, all that I needed. I do think that I’m going to need to switch math programs. I was using Math U See, but switched to Math Mammoth because I was hoping that it would help my kids to think more mathematically. In other words, they could do the problems but they didn’t really understand the concepts. Math Mammoth, however seems too abstract. If you don’t think mathematically, you’re really lost in MM, which means that my kids are really lost. Often. I think it’s a good program. I wish it was working, but it isn’t.
Also, I think that sometimes the CM way of doing LA seems too simple, so I add things in and complicate it Plus, I like to know what my middle schoolers are reading in history and science, so I try to stay ahead of that as well Really, I just need to let some things go. Thank you all again.
jeaninpa, I try to read what my middle schooler is reading, but I can’t keep up either! Just too many pages to read and not enough hours in the day. One thing I love about the SCM modules is I do trust what they recommend and they always give editorial comment if there is any question.
Oh and I try to complicate LA too. My 10YO son and I are loving Grammar-land. Not sure if you use it, but we found some great accompanying resources to use with it for free on another Mom’s blog. Let me know if interested and I’ll try to find the link.
