The summer is slipping by so fast and between baseball and swimming lessons I have accomplished absolutely nothing in regards to school. We usually take a longish summer break and while I am having the kids read daily and I read aloud to them daily it just got me thinking; if your child only read one book all summer (usually I let them choose all their summer books) or maybe even all year what would you choose for them? I am not sure we will be home schooling for high school although even if I don’t I would still require summer reading.

I was thinking along the lines of Jane Eyre and The Deerslayer etc but I wanted to hear everyone’s ideas too.

I love Jane Eyre but James Fenmore Cooper is very hard to read. Maybe some Dickens instead? David Copperfield is a must for boys and girls.

Off of the top of my head, here are a few books on my list for that age range:

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin-Harriet Beecher Stowe

    David Copperfield-Dickens

    Jane Austin novels for girls

    Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

    Little Women-Louisa May Alcott

    Sherlock Holmes-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Girl of the Limberlost-Gene Stratton Porter

    A Tale of Two Cities-Dickens

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom is on my must read list for high school.  I also would include at least one novel from Charles Dickens, one from Jane Austen, and probably one from C.S. Lewis.

Thanks ladies! Not having read many classics myself I just am not sure what to pick. I am working on trying to read more of them though. I am also stuck in a rut and have been reading the Outlander series but I just finished the last one so I am forced to read something else.  🙂

David Copperfield is on my list…I’m trying to fit it in for the coming year.  There are so many great books, it’s hard to narrow it down.  I’ve read several times recently that DC is a “must read” so it’s caught my attention.

I haven’t read some of the classic literature I assign for so long….and some not at all! (Product of the public school. Yeah, that’s my story & I’m sticking to it.)

So, maybe you could tell me, which of these is an easier read than the others? Or how would you rank them if you’ve read them all?

Pride and Prejudice, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Jane Eyre.

Dd17 is a pretty good reader, but she doesn’t always like a lot of classic literature. She is a Charles Dickens fan, though. I’d like her to read someone else this year.

I should probably have been a little clearer.  I’m not looking for an “easy read” for DD17, but we typically read lighter fare during the summer, and so I try not to hit them with the toughest of literature when we start up school again.

Hi Sue! I think The Hound of the Baskervilles is the easiest read of the three. My daughter and I just read it together and it’s a much shorter read than Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice.

For some reason I want to say that Jane Eyre is a bit of an easier read than Pride and Prejudice. I haven’t read either in quite a long time so take that with a grain of salt. 🙂 Both are some of my favorite books of all time. I’ve read Pride and Prejudice multiple times and it seems like Austin uses more complex language and is a bit wordier than Bronte.

All 3 are really wonderful books.

Are the Jane Austin books romanc-y? I don’t know why I assume they are? Can someone chime in on the amount of boy-girl relationship focus there is? I think I’m gonna have to read them.  🙂
