I have a child on lesson 17 of MUS Delta. It is on upside-down multiplication using place value notation. Dd doesn’t like it. I admit it is weird. I get it, but don’t see the point. Is there any reason to force this? She does it, gets it, but whyis it necessary?
We’re covering the multiplication in Gamma doing the Place Value Notation and I don’t get it – nor do I see the point I am curious as to what the other replies are on this topic. Thanks for posting!
The point of it is for the ease in checking the answer. I would encourage it because checking is SO important in multiple digit division and having this down makes it much easier to check; however, once the child can check the work competently there is no reason to keep doing it.
I do not understand. The upside down multiplication is not to check the division results but putting the larger number under the smaller one. And I don’t get it either. To me it makes it longer for nothing.
We are in Delta too and very stuck, we just kept going even though DS kept on making mistakes and now I need to go back, he is just not getting it. I am finding it so discouraging right now.
I am with Heather in Gamma and had similar issues. What I did was teach it to my son about three different ways – the ways Mr. Demme taught it, and then my way . He said that my was was much easier . Just to be sure I had him explain everything to me, what the place values were etc. until I was convinced that he DID in fact understand the why behind it all and not just how to get the right answer. That is satisfactory enough to me. I have conquered some pretty high level math and honestly my brain had a hard time understanding those other methods – I just chalk it up to all our brains working in different ways to achieve the same results!

My dd used this checking method for awhile but does not need it any longer. I don’t think that it was a huge help for us IMHO 🙂
The upside down multiplication makes checking the division easy. It’s easy to see the different values. I had to read the Delta book a couple of times and play with it, but now it makes lots of sense to us. It was great for dd to SEE the importance of place value. I don’t think she will need it much longer, though.
