I will be starting lesson 17 soon on upside down multiplication and I just am not seeing the purpose and how it is helpful. Also, I’ve looked over the next few lessons and just don’t know if it will be more confusing to do it this way with more steps instead of the traditional long division way. Any thoughts on this? Thank you so much!
Oh, I remember those lessons! I was hesitant too, but my son had no problem grasping the concept-I taught him “my way” too and let him choose which method he wants. Don’t be afraid to contact Math U See with your question either-I have a friend who called them several times in Gamma to walk her through a particular concept. She says they are very helpful-also, if you’re wondering about the purpose-call them and let them explain what their perspective on the purpose is! My same friend seriously considered switching math curriculums, but before she did, she called MUS and basically said, “Convince me to stay with you.” and they did! 🙂
My son is finishing up Delta. I had him do it for a bit, but then told him he didn’t have to. I just had him check his work the regular way I was taught:)
Did you watch the video with him? I thought it explained the reasoning very well. At first it was hard for my older son and I to figure out, but now with second ds I’ve got it down, and he didn’t have any problem with it, either (though he prefers the other way). I made sure they understood the concept and then I’ve allowed them to continue checking whichever way they prefer. The boys are now on lessons 24 and 21. I’ll be glad when they are done Delta, though it rather looks like they will have to work through most of the summer to finish it before September (that’s fine — I need them to keep up those math skills!)
Thanks for the advice y’all. 4myboys, I have to locate the DVD. I thought it would help but, I’m in the process of cleaning out the schoolroom to become a nursery so it’s somewhere in that mess. Hopefully, I’ll find it soon. I have mine do math over the summer, too.
