For those that asked, I’ve posted about multiplication over at my blog – scripting an entire lesson on how to introduce multiplication to your children the CM-way. I hope you can understand the script. It was a bit tricky to write out in detail what works out to be only about a 20 minute lesson.
Richele, My oldest daughter (almost 10) has appeared to be pretty solid in multiplication (coming from MEP maths). Last week and this week I’ve been using Ray’s Intellectual with her … 10 minutes on a new lesson, 5 minutes to “overlearn” her multiplication (Lesson XIII) facts in a variety of ways, and 5 minutes on some of addition from Intellectual (2x/wk and subtraction 2x/wk). Today I used your “lesson” from this blog post to propel our multiplication lessons further into the CM realm and I was awesomely impressed at 1) how simple it was to implement, 2) how much she loved using dimes and pennies and interacting with her math lesson, and 3) how I could see connections being made by using the manipulatives and the oral work and a wee bit of writing on the whiteboard.
I’m grateful. Can’t wait for the follow-up post. 🙂
Thank you! I’m reading your book now and finding it fascinating. I wish I’d had it years ago! Sending this article to my kindle to read it over carefully…
Thank you so much for your very kind words. Knowing practically how the lesson works in your home is incredibly helpful to me as well. @MmeLabonte, the note cracked me up as well. It was written and passed to me one day while I was on the phone and I assumed it would be asking for cookies or ice cream. It was a pleasant surprise and a reminder how Charlotte Mason’s methods have really revolutionized the arithmetic lessons in our own home as well as the way my kids and I see math.
All my best,
Richele
