I don’t know where I saw it but I saw a post about Systematic Math. I use MUS see right now and love it, though I have a child who has been stuck on the same multiplacation problems forever (like 2 months) and still can’t seem to get them down.
Can you tell me the difference between these two programs?
Also, if you have any suggestions for getting the multiplication facts down I’d love any help I can get.
I don’t know anything about the curricula you’re asking about, but I picked up this tip in a book. Haven’t tried it yet; my oldest is in kindergarten. If he already knows how to play War, change the rules a little. The winner of the hand must give the product of the two cards before he can pick them up. If he can’t, he forfeits and the other player has to give the answer to claim the cards.
Systematic Mathematics starts in 6th grade and the author recommends Practical Arithmetic Books 1 and 2 for younger kids. My 10 year old is in the middle of the 1st book and my 8 year old is in MUS Gamma. The Practical Arithmetic books are “old school” and very thorough and effective. They drill, drill, drill. My kids are in different books because they each need different things. The one in MUS uses the songs to skip count and memorize his tables, my other child just needs to drill incessantly. So we do both and I love both, it just depends on the kid. Practical Arithmetic may be a great supplement to MUS. It is inexpensive and has lots and lots of word problems.
