What about the movie staring Charlten Heston, Ben Hur? We watched that a few years ago and really enjoyed it. There are some sort of some intense scenes so if you have any sensitive viewers, you may want to preview. Overall, it is a really great classic.
Not a movie, but when after we studied Greece we watched the corresponding episodes from Drive Thru History on Netflix. We are on Rome now and plan to do the same.
When we studied Rome, we enjoyed the BBC documentary “What the Ancients Did for Us: The Romans”. You can watch the entire episode on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgJ_hFjyKlI
It covers many different aspects of Roman life, including The Roman Bath, Roman Roads, The Roman Military, The Roman Glass Industry, Architecture, Aqueducts, inventions, etc.
The host, Adam Hart Davis, then re-creates some of the Roman inventions and ideas so children can see how they work. (He’s pretty funny, too.)
