I don’t know how many of you are aware of this movie, but my mom shared it with me a few years back. It’s based on the Musical, but in movie form from 1972 (still a musical). The Focus is that Summer of 1776. The main player being the intense and passionate John Adams (as well as Abigail) and the issues they debated, then the writing of the Declaration. Esp. the issue of slavery towards the end is handled very powerfully.
From my reading, I notice it has actual words from historical letters in the dialogue, too.
Is it a documentary? No, but it’s has historical facts in it, but presented very in a very enjoyable way. Does it have anything objectionable? Yes, the frequent use of a few curse words, G-d’s Name taken in vain (which I actually think is out of character for the depiction of John Adams), and one big use of G-d’s Name cursing someone. Which is a shame because it is totally unecessary. So I leave it up to you, you may want to preview before showing it to your middle/high school children. It’s PG, by 1972’s standards, but I don’t know what it would be now.
I wanted to share the existance of it w/ya’ll in case you want to check it out. It is entertaining, despite those verbal disappointments, and is inspirational for the cause of Independance. But I like History and I like musicals, so it’s a good combo for me.
I rented it from Netflix.
