During this slow recovery from my surgery, I decided to just start our new homeschooling year with our new curriculum. Because of my definite limits, I just check off what we get done, forgoing my usual OCD manner, and picking it up the next day with no guilt. We school year round, so I realized that school doesn’t have to only happen M-F for 35 wks. After a day or two of juggling all the instructor guides, I combined all in one notebook to hold the current 5 wks.
It has been amazing! All four ages 4 to 10 sat on the edge of their seats, QUIET, with bated breath, and gasps of excitement…while reading entire chapters of Boxcar Children. Absolutely stunning that even the 4 y/o was enthralled! I am having a blast reading Red Sails to Capri, having lived in Italy as a child. The cadence of the dialogue is hysterical.
We have always read to our children, but now that the majority of our schooling consists of reading aloud, discussing the pictures and ideas, (and is actually getting done now that I have checkboxes!), we have been transformed. My dd 10 after nightly prayers was hugging my neck, and said in my ear with great emphasis, ‘Mommy, you have no idea how much I LOVE you and Daddy reading to me. I love our new school, and I love checkboxes! Already, I have seen amazing improvement in all. 🙂 And they are talking about all kinds of new things. It has been precious and definitely different than what I pictured the school day looking like, definitely different than when I was homeschool. The deepening of relationships has been priceless.
This period of recovery has been revealed as a gift. Thank you, Lord.
