I have 8 children (16,10,8,7,6,3,2,1). We use Heart of Dakota tweaked. What I’m struggling with the most is trying to keep our work all done in the morning or all done without a break of some sort. With the little ones, its just hard to not take break after break for various things. My 16yo is independent, so I’m mainly talking about the work for my middle guys (10,8,7). It only takes about 2 1/2 hours, but it feels rushed if we try to get it all done at once. Plus, its hard to keep my attention on them with the toddlers running amuck.
How do I keep momentum? I’m trying to change the parts of their brains and body they use, but that can kill the momentum too. We usually too “table work” and “couch work”. I know they get tired of too much table work, but if we have to move from the table to the couch and then back again, it takes longer.
Would it be better to spread it out over the whole day or just get it done in one large block?
Maybe this is overly simplistic. But, have you thought of doing it all as “couch work” and giving them all lapdesks to use? We do pretty much all family work in the living room (and much of their indv. work as well) and use a lap desk and/or the coffee table for anything that a table or desk is needed for. It works well for us, maybe it will for you?
We have some folding tables stored under the couch, that we’ve set up before, and that works well. Our “school” area is the dining room (but we actually use it as a diningroom, because we can’t all fit in the kitchen.) Anyway, I wouldn’t mind doing everything in the living room, we’d just have to cart books back and forth. It could work, though. I’d be closer to the hallway and bedrooms where the toddlers run around and play.
We have a large whiteboard in the school/diningroom so we’d still have to go in there.
