Can anyone give feedback on the Marrin books in this module?  There are a lot of them (Stalin, Hitler, Victory in the Pacific, The Yanks are Coming)…I trust they’re very good books, but I am wondering if this is a LOT of heavy stuff all in a row.  Have any of you read these books?  I’m just thinking…my son is reading the Grapes of Wrath now for literature and he just read The Jungle before that…and we have The War to End All Wars and all these books coming up next.  I don’t want to bog him down too much.  Surely there are some good books for that time period about more positive things?? 🙂  I’m wondering if I should seek out a couple to replace one or two of the Marrin books.  Any thoughts?  (For literature I’m pulling books from Sonlight that fit this time period.)

I have not found any other books that are as unbiased as the Marrin books. We’ve read quite a few and I still cannot figure out if he was pro-North or pro-South! I appreciate that about him. I understand your impression, though. I found that my childrens’ reactions were not to be brought down, but to grow in their patriotism and understanding of how we need to be vigilant of our own government.

The Hiding Place is very uplifting and another book we have recently discovered is Unbroken (by Laura Hillenbrand), a very gripping, uplifting story. There is reference to the ‘pornographic palace’ which was the restroom in the barracks where there were pictures pinned up. I know one mom that just wrote in the margin, “How sad” as a gentle reminder to her son of where sin can take you. It is a very exciting story of redemption.

    Blessings,

The Marrin books shouldn’t be missed, IMO. There is VERY LITTLE written from a “living” standpoint relating to modern times. Marrin fills a very important niche.

Robin P, do you have a list of Marrin books you could share?

You can find all his books at his site here http://www.albertmarrin.com/books-marrin.html

Beautiful Feet has reprinted several.  We also LOVE Marrin books 🙂

Thank you so much ladies for your input!!  I think we’ll probably do them all then.

Rachel…others will have more to say obviously who’ve read them…but since I’m here now, I’ll just say that in SCM and in Beautiful Feet they are scheduled mostly for high school.  SCM does use The Yanks Are Coming and Victory in the Pacific for grades 7-9 also.
