Okay, so I have finally decided to stop beating my head against the wall trying to keep up with 3 Ambleside Online schedules.  So, I’m going to have all 3 (5th grade, 7th grade, and 10th grade) in SCM History Module 5.  However,  I would rather use some already obtained resources rather than start from scratch.  It seems a shame to buy a new American History spine book when I already have This Country of Ours in my library.  Has anyone attempted this?  I started to try and match up stories from each book, but some just didn’t seem to line up.  Any suggestions?

TCOO is so much longer than Stories of America Vol 1 that it may be difficult to do. I don’t think you could do it story-for-story because it would be way to much reading on some of the days. I think you may have to either cut out some of the chapters in TCOO, or else consider reading from your spine more often than is scheduled in the guide.

For what it’s worth, I am replacing the Famous Men book in that same module with George Washington’s World, and GWW it is a lot longer. So I think substitutions can be made, you may just have to work with it a bit.

Certainly you can make substitutions to the history modules if you’d like…but I think that takes away some of the simplicity of using them. Ironically enough, I recently decided to give AO a try after beating my head against the wall trying to adjust the SCM mods to use with resources that were more readily available to me.

But….that doesn’t mean it might not be just what you are looking for! Certainly worth a try if the family-style schooling appeals to you. I still do really like the SCM modules! Just wanted to give a heads up that it may get complicated if you start trying to swap too many things around.

I have GWW world too., so I have that option as well.  Thanks MamaSnow.  I just feel that AO gets to be so much that when we don’t get it all done, I feel like we are “falling behind”.   I know there is no such thing, but it gets a bit frustrating after a while.  My 10th grader is in year 9, my 7th grader is in year 4, and my 5th grader is still in year 3.  My 10th grader finally admitted to me he finds Churchill’s history to be too dry, so I already have to start from scratch for him.  Since year 4 and 9 cover the same time period, I thought maybe we could just go to a family setting instead and bring my 5th grader into the fold.  I’ll have to make a decision and just go with it.

    ajiwac,

I’d be interested to know how you adapt Module 5 for your 10th grader who is in AO Year 9. We are currently doing AO Year 9 as well but I’m looking to try to use Module 5 and adapt it with the AO resources I already have for Year 9.

I am feeling just like what you said above that I feel like I’m falling behind if we don’t keep up with each weekly reading with AO. I love AO but we did have some things we had to change after starting school this year and we need to scale back a bit I think. It’s funny, last year, I started out with AO as well but ended up switching some of the scheduled resources with other things. I actually considered switching to SCM for the history, geography, etc. I didn’t though; instead I used TruthQuest for the history. I wanted to give a go at AO again this year and have planned to use it as our sole curriculum. But with the changes we have needed to make, I feel like it might work a little better to use SCM Module 5 and adapt it with some of the AO resources. I feel like I need a little more to help me with the history side of things by way of dialogue and instruction. It’s hard to do all the extra preparation needed for the Churchill book (on top of all the other things we are doing for school) which is what my daughter is using as her spine for the history this term. We are using an American history book for Term 2 and had planned to finish up Churchill in Term 3.

I know that two of the things I will probably want to keep are the biographies we are reading for John Adams and George Washington. But without having Module 5 to look at (other than the sample), it’s hard to know what resources I could use from AO with the module. Have you already purchased SCM Module 5? If so, have you made any decisions yet on what you are going to use from AO for your 10th grader along with SCM?
