We do not follow the SCM Module 3 guide for geography. We just do a map drill each week and add 2-3 countries a week. This Thursday will be our last map drill for this module, as we have already learned all the countries in the module. We are just beginning our second term, and I don’t want to go the rest of the year without geography. Can anyone suggest what we can do next? I was thinking maybe a map of modern-day Italy, but I’m not sure how practical that is, maybe just for fun? We already know the Middle East and Asia too, so those are out. My only other thought is to begin the United States. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Great job! Come teach my kids. Wink

Either choose a new place or learn about cities, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. where you’ve already studied. Watch travel videos for those places to bring it alive. Choose a living book set in those places to read. Play games on the iPad and online.

    The sky’s the limit!

Can you recommend some books or iPad games for Ancient Rome? Wink

I would focus on modern geography, Lindsey, for any map games. I don’t see much use in learning ancient geo.

For living books, I’d look for anything that gives insight into the geography and culture of the area. Ill post some suggestions later.

iPad games – Tap Quiz maps, Montessori Approach to Geo., stack the states/countries. Online there is seterra and shepherd software (both free).

There are some movies/documentaries that we enjoyed for that module. I remember one called The Rise of the Apartments being interesting. There were others in that series we enjoyed, too. We watched some Rick Steve’s travel videos re. Some countries in the area to see what it is like now. Drive thru History is another option.

Rome Antics by David maccauley (sp?)

    This is Rome by sasek

Even the advent story Jotham’s Journey gives a look into area geo. and culture. (Good timing, too)

    Book options

Our little Roman Cousin – http://www.heritage-history.com/www/heritage-books.php?Dir=books&MenuItem=display&author=cowles&book=roman&story=school

There is a series of these and you may find more you like. They are also offered by yesterday’s Classics.

Madeline Brandeis has a series called Children of All Lands, perhaps there is one that might tie in. I don’t own all of them so I’m not sure. Check Wikipedia for a list.

We are enjoying the Book of Marvels by Halliburton. It covers lots of places.

Try some options from here too – https://www.google.com/search?q=living+geography+books&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari

I remember you e-mailing me the names of those movies, Christie. I’ll look for them now. I downloaded the free version of Stack the States the other day and played it a little myself. It was actually quite fun!

For a map, I was thinking of doing a modern-day map of Italy, labeling major cities, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. I just wasn’t sure how practical that would be…unless, of course, we ever take a family vacation to Italy–not out of the question, but probably unlikely. Undecided

I vote for the in-depth study of Italy geographically.  I think this will have a greater impact on your kiddos understanding of history when they really look at Italy’s position in Europe.  God’s timing in sending His son when this particular country was in power was not a happenstance, and when one puts together the position in Europe, the major cities in Rome (then and now), the Roman transportation system (their famed roads as well as their ships), it really brings things into perspective.

I know your kiddos are younger than mine; that withstanding, I think they would really get a lot out of a detailed study of Italy.

    Just my $.02, FWIW.

I have an ipad app called Ancient Rome. It’s by encyclopedia britannica kids. It’s a little over his head in some areas, but he finds the puzzles fun. We do it together.
