I just purchased the eBook version of Gen-Duet. and it looks really good so far.  I do, though, have 2 questions.

    1. Once we get to term 2 we are studying Ancient Egypt history.  Why are we doing geography study of Africa?

    2. I like how in the rest of the books that have been published that bible, geography, and history are dispersed equally throught the book.  Has anyone tried rearranging the lessons to do this, or would this be a bad idea.

And, I just thought of another one, so I’ll go ahead and ask that, too!!  I know there was a post somewhere that talked about combining 2 modules into one.  I have a 14 year old who only has 5 years of school left, so if I were to combine module 1 and 2 what would I have to leave out?  Or, if I didn’t want to combine, should I start at a different point or just leave off module 6??

    Thanks in advance, friends 🙂

Hi Meagan  I can only comment on the Africa geography. My guess is because Egypt is in Africa it would be the most logical continent to study? Sonya has spread the study of geography over the 6 yr cycle and she covers all the continents during that time. Your focus is still Egypt, for map study and geography they are just learning the names and placement of the countries on the continent. At least thats how I am doing it:) I will go a little more in depth with the geography of Egypt (rivers, Nile delta, flood plains, etc etc, since the Egyptians believed the river was the giver of life, it was important to them. I am not going to go deep into the religious aspect of what they believed but there is a correlation between what the Bible says about the giving of life, and this fits well. Ooops, I am rambling, sorry, I tend to do that when I am excited:)

As to your second Q. I know Sonya has mentioned to me that she is revamping and rewriting this first module to take out books that are out of print and make it more similar in layout to the newer modules. Not sure when that will happen, but likely not till next spring. I am going to add in a few books and spread them through the year such as Letters from Egypt which is just recently available.

I would LOVE to hear about combining modules as well, since I have a 14yo son who also has just a few years left.

    Heidi,

Wow–what was I thinking??  Of course we study the whole continent and not just the country.

What I’m thinking about doing with our oldest is just starting in the beginning and working our way through the first five modules.  All of our children have a really strong interest in American History, and it is something that we have been doing a lot of reading on, even when they were in the public school, and we will teach this in addition to the world history.  I’m fairly confident that we will get enough covered this way and not confuse the kids too much (I hope!!)

Am I understanding correctly about the layout of the history modules;  American history isn’t covered in these until modules 5 and 6?  Also, Meagan, I was wondering if you cover American and World history simultaneously or are you alternating units of each?

This is one area that I’m really struggling with making a decision on how to plan it out.  I’ve considered following the modules straightforwardly and adding in American history around certain holidays (4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc.) until it’s thoroughly covered in the last two modules.  I’m probably making this harder than it is (unfortunately that’s my nature–or perhaps it’s just a habit that needs to be replaced! Undecided )

    Thanks!

From my understanding, you’re right that American History isn’t covered until the later modules, keeping with teaching history chronologically.

Our plan is to teach world and American history simultaneously, though I will make no gauruntees that it will work out-this is our first year homeschooling.  My sons have a lot of interest in American history, so don’t want to leave that our for them.  This year we will focus on American presidents.

I think that teaching your kids some American history around the holidays is an awesome plan!  I may have to steal that from you 🙂

And I often make things too difficult, I’m trying to let that go!

    Hope some of that helped!!

I thought I’d chime in regarding teaching World and American history simultaneously. We’re on our 3rd year of doing that.

This year we are using Module 3 from SCM (Matt through Acts & Ancient Rome) to cover Bible, Geo. and World History. I am just following the plan laid out in the guide and putting things in our BOC. (In the past we made a wall timeline, but I’m ready to try the BOC and will fill in what we’ve done previously.)

For American History, we use Mara Pratt’s American History Stories. We read, narrate, add a drawing/copywork sentence to a My America folder (collection from each chapter or two we study).

I’ve not added any Am. history to our BOC b/c we’ve just begun a family BOC this year and I’ve been doing the Am. History notebook for 2 years already. I will add the Am. History to our BOC when I hit modules 6 & 7.

We don’t study World and American on the same day of the week. However, we’ve had no problems with doing both simultaneously.

For some great ideas (where many of mine come from) re. CM methods, visit Lindafay’s blog at … http://higherupandfurtherin.blogspot.com/ and she combines both in her curriculum.

Thanks for your responses and the information.  I appreciate your input so much!!  After much prayer and thought, I feel like this year we need to just focus on following Module 1 pretty straightforwardly and go from there.

I have another question about Module 1.  I am looking to assign my two younger kids (4th and 5th grade) some independent reading of their own.  I know that Boy of the Pyramids is listed as a read-aloud resource for 1-3 grade.  For any of you that have used this, would this be age appropriate as independent reading for my age boys?

    Thanks!!

    Meagan,

We read Boy of the Pyramids as a read-aloud, but it would be perfectly appropriate as independent reading for a 4th and 5th grader.  My kids LOVED it!

Thanks, Heather! How old were your kids that you read it to?

    Megan,

My kids are 12, 8, and 3 and they are still acting out the scenes with their Playmobile figures Laughing

Quick question here…  I’m getting ready to purchase Gen-Duet handbook.  I’m trying to plan out financially what other books I need to and am able to purchase now. From reading through the sample lesson plans I understand that at first it looks like I will only need The True Story of Noah’s Ark.  My boys are in the 1st and 2nd grade.  Is this correct?  What other books under the Geography would you consider a must for the first term?  I really want to get Material World and Uncle Josh’s Outline Map Book (checking for them on ebay).  But are they necessary the first term?

    Thanks for all the help!

    Carrie,

Yes, The True Story of Noah’s Ark is the only book you “need” for term 1.  I would highly recommend The Child’s Story Bible for the younger kiddos, but a regular Bible will work.  Material World is nice to have, but with your children so young, you could wait and add it in later years.  Uncle Josh’s Outline Map book is great, but the CD is even better.  If you can swing it, I’d get the CD.  It’s so nice just to click and print from your computer.  However, it’s another resource that you could wait on, due to the age of your children.  They would enjoy simply looking at a wall map and a globe for Geography.  Hope this helps.

    Blessings!

    Heather

Thank you Heather.  My boys are used to us just reading to them from the KJV Bible so we’ll keep up with that.  My 7 yr old has taken it upon himself to begin reading it!  Which is just exciting for us.

Thanks again, now I have an idea what to do and where to go!

FYI………For maps, you can also Goggle any map you need and print it out, e.g., outline map of Africa. Although, having the CD is also a great resource.
