The “Modest Clothing for Mom” discussion that began a few weeks ago really lit a spark for me. I realized that all my life I’ve been given the impression that I was hopelessly immature (backward), when really, I’ve just been trying to figure out modesty without support or a language for it. So THANK YOU for posting.
Armed with a word for it, I’ve found many resources including one I want to share with all of you. Six Ways to Keep the “Little” in Your Girl by Dannah Gresh is aimed at moms of 8-12 yr olds. My dd is 6 & I’m interested as there are some things I’ve let slide, figuring I’d get to them sometime. Examples: Barbie dolls & my mother’s love of buying her “darling” clothes that have the mini-tramp look. This book is giving me the courage to address these issues sooner rather than later. It is helping me to see that I’m not confining her childhood by setting new limits, but giving her childhood back to her.
Related website: http://www.secretkeepergirl.com has a “truth or bare” section with girls who meet this author’s criteria for modesty demonstrating 6 guidelines for modest dressing (1 rule: if you sit cross-legged in front of a mirror & see your underwear, the skirt or shorts are too short–the girl in the photo is wearing shorts that pass the test).
I hope this information will be helpful to some of you, as the original discussion was for me.
Thanks for the link. My dd is only 3.5, but I’m already putting her in t-shirts one size larger so she won’t show too much belly. (We live in the deep south, so layering is an option only in the winter. Plus, she’s just learning to dress herself, so one shirt is plenty for that right now.)
BTW, I took the test for the tight shirt. I’m not sure I did it right, though. My button down popped right back, but I thought it fit fine in the chest.
I agree about layers. I rely on them a lot for me and my girls (mostly the oldest at this point) but mext month we move to Georgia and layers will not be so easy when it is hot.
