I’m still trying to decide about what math to use for my 6yo daughter. I am looking at Ray’s arithmetic or MCP math (because it’s cheaper than math-u-see and I can use manipulatives I have already). I like that Ray’s is oral in the beginning, and I like them being able to do mental math early. Has anyone used Modern Curriculum Press for math? I can’t seem to find any sample pages of it online. I know it’s a workbook and different than Ray’s in that, but I know they are both mastery based. Just looking for anyone’s experience with it. Is it similar to math-u-see without the fancy manipulatives?
I used MCP math with my oldest two in first and second grade and my oldest DD hated it. She would cry when it came to math. Of course she still says she hates math now that we are using Christian Light Publications (CLP) but I know she doesn’t mean it in the same way. I started out with MCP because my sister used it with her kids and she thinks its great but it didn’t work for us so I switched. Actually I used a year of professor B math in between the two but am done with changing. We will make it work however we need to. My best advice is to pick one and try it and see how it goes. Your child is young enough so you can change if it doesn’t work for you. Every child is different. And try not to get bogged down by all the many choices out there!
I looked at MEP before. I’m sure it is a good program and I like that it is free. Kristen, thanks for the encouragement, it is so easy to get overwhelmed by all the options out there! I don’t want to be switching math programs all the time, but my daughter is still young so I think picking one and seeing how it goes is good advice 🙂 I’ll check christianbook, thanks Holly!
