I have read multiple posts on mod 6 spine choices and I still stay confused. Would someone mind going over spine choices and how far they would take us? Oh and do they cover world or just american history? I have been trying to plan our year for over a month now and honestly I don’t think I am any further than when I started. I am so near tears! I have bought the all day seminar as well as the planner.

I’m trying to look back at the previous threads covering Module 6 spine choices and see if I can put together an overview of the most often mentioned ones. I haven’t completely 100% decided what I want to use, so it would probably help me, too. However, I am in the midst of gathering samples and listing books read for our annual portfolio review (required by our state), so I probably won’t get to this until Tuesday or Wednesday.

If you can hang in there, I’ll post something then. Or maybe someone else will post on it. Don’t cry, take a bubble bath, read a good book (for yourself), have a cup of tea/coffee. When I started planning last year, it seemed to take forever. It mostly all got done in time for school.

Thanks Sue 🙂 I have been trying to plan for about a month now and I feel like I am chasing my tail. Then lastnight DH says “Why would you want to start 1850-modern? Why not start at the begining?” Oh I could have slapped him silly.

I want to start with mod 6 because the kids LOVE Lincoln, I have the most books for this time period, and I thought it would be a great gentle start with something they are familiar with. They can’t quite grasp “Ancient” anything. I have 10,8,,6 and 3 yr old.

I don’t know if this helps, but I’m doing Module 6 this year and using Truthquest History Guides. I use their commentary as a spine and the spines they rec. that I have (This Country of Ours and a bit of Child’s History of the World, mainly).  That’s only modern. I’m just not worrying about world until next year, when we start Module 1.  We’re following SCM’s geography, too.  I have a 12yo and 9yo with a detailed, day-by-day, Word document of what we read together and also their daily independent readings.  If it happens to match your kids ages and what you want to study I’d be happy to try and send.  It took some time to put together, but I’m happy to have something that matches my kids levels well, I think.   HTH some:)  Gina

P.S.  If your kids are younger, I might not worry about a spine and just read the SCM books listed:)

I finally had a chance to go through some of the past threads and I put together a sort of overview chart of comments on the most often discussed Module 6 spines plus a few others mentioned. This is by no means a comprehensive list of what’s available, just the main ones we’ve talked about here. Hopefully, this will be of some help and not further add to anyone’s confusion!

You can access it by clicking here.

    HTH,

Oh my Sue that looks FANTASTIC!!! I guess we will just choose one and then worry about post 1907-13 when we get there LOL.

    Thanks!!

Well, if you choose an American history spine that is really appealing to you and it only goes so far, you can always just continue on using the spine you’ve chosen for world history if it goes up to 2000 or close to it. For example, Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World (Vol. 4) takes you that far and it includes the major points of American history.

And, if your children are young enough (my youngest two are 10 and 12), they’ll be covering module 6 again in middle or high school….and then we’ll have SCM’s upcoming spines to use for Modern Times! (To paraphrase an old song from the early 1980’s, Celebrate Modern Times, come on! Let’s celebrate….) Cool

As my mom used to say to me, “You’re getting silly, go to bed!”

I have to see if someone from my HS group has a copy of SOTW Vol 4 or not. I hate to order it if we don’t like it. I have not even got as far to look into world history yet 🙁

We found SOTW at one of our suburban libraries. I have a patron card there and am willing to drive the 20-25 minutes if I have to….and we get to keep items for 3 weeks plus 3 renewals if nobody else puts it on hold. Our local library has volume 4 on cd, so my voice can take a break from reading on world history days!

We’re listening to it too.  Will you all listen/discuss/narrate or just listen??  We’re locating geo location beforehand then listen to.  I’m not asking for narration since it’s not written in way that would make it easy for my 9yo (maybe my 12yo should be??)  Or should my 9yo as well??

    TIA.
