I was looking (without luck) for a thread from several months ago that spoke about substitutes for Letters from Egypt as well as the Pyramid book (I think people posted about a dvd?) Not sure if they were the same thread or not…
Anyways, if anyone has some suggestions, I would appreciate them. I have boys in 3rd and 6th.
We have the Pyramid book and we bought the DVD (at Walmart’s special sale) from National Geographic called ‘Unlocking the Great Pyramid” which was a documentary about a French architect’s theory of how the pyramids were built. They actually filmed in and around the pyramid, so the kiddos got to see it for themselves. We enjoyed it very much.
At http://www.myaudioschool.com/?cat=6, there are a couple of audiobooks that we listened to and could easily be substituted called Peeps at Many Lands. There are two different ones by different authors. One is by Baikie and the other is a members-only access 9can’t remember his name). But they were shorter and used more easily understood language than Letters from Egypt. =) HTH
My girls and I had no problems with Letters From Egypt. Occasionally I did have them draw pictures of things we were listening to – like how the fields were laid out, what the ladies might look like, etc. to help them stay focused. They were and 11 at the time. They will still make comments and connections from what we read.
My 6 year old has been liking Letters from Egypt which surprised me after some of the reviews about it being harder to understand. I think she would get even more out of a book with easier language but so far it’s been fine.
