My 7 y/o DD is fascinated with different countries, their cultures, their languages, etc. She wants to learn Spanish, and we are going to start that soon (haven’t started yet b/c I’m just trying to get the main subjects going well since it’s our first year HS’ing, but I have a curriculum to start when I am ready to dig it out). A couple of weeks ago DD told me that when she grows up she wants to be a missionary. Is there a good curriculum for studying various missionaries, or do we just read books? A friend of mine loaned us a book called Children Just Like Me. It is a book filled with children from all over the world. DD has enjoyed that book, and she was particularly interested in the Egyptian children since we are doing Module 1. I would just like to incorporate some missionary study as well. Where do I even begin?

We’ve loved a series of books called Hero Tales (there are several volumes)as an introduction to missionaries. Each book contains a number of missionary stories, broken into several chapters each, with each short chapter highlighting a different virtue. At the end of each chapter are some questions that help with narration, as well as a Scripture verse to discuss and pray about. You could pair each story with readings from Children Just Like Me if you wished – we love that book too.

My Children also loved Missionary Stories with the Millers.

We are now reading Missionary Stories with the Millers. It is wonderful! Another good book is You Can Change The World *Learning to Pray For People Around the World* by Jill Johnstone It has 26 countries from A-Z and 26 people groups. Each country has a map, info on the country, people, children, trade, food, and their religious beliefs. On the sidebars are prayers specifically for that country. There are two volumes. I think they are out of print, but you can find them on amazon, ebay,and some other sites. I highly recommend it if you can get one!

We are currently using Children Just Like Me with our Galloping the Globe study. Our 6 & 8 year old like it as well. They also really like Missionary Stories with the Millers and the Trailblazer Books… http://www.trailblazerbooks.com/Frame-1.html We use them as read alouds and typically our 15 & 18 year olds show up when I’m reading them as well. They are definitely a family favorite. We read the first Hero Tales book a couple of years and it was just ok for us. They seem appealing with the short stories, but they just weren’t great for us. what ages are the trailblazer books recommended for as a read aloud? my almost 5 and almost 7 ds loved The Boy of the Pyramids and handled the mystery and such fine. The younger ds is pretty sensitive to people being hurt/robbed etc and I know that happened a lot with the early missionaries. Any suggestions?

There is also The Adventure Series. I’m sure reading your daughter living books on Missionaries will continue to fuel the fire. She might also enjoy Trailblazers: Great Missionary Women. Blessings!

On the back cover it says “Thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers (ages 8-12) to Christian heroes of the past.” But again, I’ve been reading them aloud to age 6 -18 years old. Several of them are listed on the Sonlight book lists in the early grades. So far, we’ve read:

Kidnapped by River Rats
The Chimney Sweep’s Ransom
The Bandit of Ashley Downs
The Theives of Tyburn Square
