Okay, here is another question as you are all so kind to answer my many questions 😉 Does anyone know of any good missionary stories to read with my children. My almost 8 year old especially seems interested in missions and says he wants to be a missionary when he grows up. I don’t know where to begin with this. We get Voice of the Martyrs magazine regularly and he loves it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Try YWAM’s website (Youth With A Mission) They publish an entire series of stories about missionaries.

“Missionary Stories with the Millers”, by Mildred A. Martin! It is an amazing book, and sounds just like what you are needing! All of the “Millers” stories are good and worth getting! We just started this one with our family as a read aloud, and it is great so far! Hope that helps! You can order it from Rod and Staff….and I think Christian Light publications.
Maybe Amazon too!

Thanks so much! The YWAM stories look great – I know I’ve seen these before and had forgotten all about them. Also, Missionary Stories with the Millers does look exactly like what we’re looking for 🙂 Thanks Christie! I can’t wait to see where these books take us. God is so Good.

You might also look at books that tell stories of the historical Christian church and its significant people. Trial and Triumph is one that comes to mind. These stories might be more aobut martyrdom than missions in the current sense of missions, but they can be incredibly encouraging and give kids (and adults!) a sense of being part of a flow of history.

Thanks a bunch for letting me know about Trial and Triumph. I checked it out and it looks very appealing! It’s now on my wish list and can’t wait to read it with the family. What a blessing! 🙂

i love missionary stories w. the millers too. i highly recommend. Although pre-read them yourself depending on the age of the child. There were a few that were about subjects I was not ready to introduce DS to. But.. We were even reading the one about Jim Elliot and I thought (thru a brief pre-reading) that it was not THE story- but it was THE story of him and he died. And my 7 year old boy and i had such a wonderful discussion… it was incredible. I think God blinded my eyes as i was pre-reading because I am not sure i would have read that to him. and it was so worthwhile!

Another missionary book crossed my path. In the Old Schoolhouse mag. there was a card advertising a book from Gospel for Asia. It’s called “Even Donkey’s Speak & other Stories of God’s Miracles in Asia”. It’s directed to ages 7-12. It’s only 7.99. we haven’t started reading it yet, but you can also incorporate geography with it, too as there is a map w/each new story..

I just don’t know how to thank you enough! You have directed me to so much more than what I could have ever imagined was out there. I thank you and so do my dear children and my dear husband! Now I just have to choose which series to start with. Any suggestions? We are new to missionary stories and need something light to start with. Again, you’ve been MORE than helpful! We’ve liked starting w/the Hero Tales series. It’s a great intro. w/questions at the end and a bible verse (which I prefer to look it up personally because I can’t stand partial verses!). I’ve heard similar stories about Missionary… Millers. That it was good, but had to be edited depending on the ages of the children and personal views, but good stuff just the same.
Also, you could have your 8 yr. old read an account on her own. For personal reading The Adventures from around the World series is age 7-12 (at Timberdoodle and G & T and Amazon )and the Trailblazer series is 9+ (if she reads on that level, the words are sorta small, though). The Jungle Doctor series is 10-12. If you go to the Timberdoodle site, you can request a catalog, then you can see all their missionary and devotional books. Grace and Truth had many, too. The links are above. I like G & T, alot of great books to choose from, not just missions but much in character training.
Timberdoodle has a new missionary story from Iran; “Tales of Persia” for 9 and up. I received a YWAM catalog the other day and as Cheryl mentioned, they have wonderful missionary biographies; lotsa meat in them. Maybe you could get a catalog from them as well.
