I mentioned in my post about Sunday School that I’m putting together shoeboxes with the children for Operation Christmas Child. I was thinking it would be nice to have a book to read to them about missionaries, or something else that might tie in. They’re aged 2-11, with more younger than older kids. I do have Material World and Hungry Planet, that I thought I might utilize as well, but was hoping to find a story book as well. I’ll only have about ten minutes allotted for the book. Any ideas?

Thank you kindly for the help!

My boys never wanted the book to end! However, be prepared to be amazed and cry!

I second the Millers – my kids loved, loved, loved it.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading these with my kids, but I was under the impression they were for a bit older crowd? I’ll have a lot of preschool/kindergarten kids so I was hoping to find something that would be more picture book format. How long are each of the stories in the Miller books?

    Thanks for the help!

The stories are about 4-5 pages long, so maybe a bit lengthy for prek/k level. We did them when my kids were in grades 1-3.

With my little kids I used the YWAM picture books on different missionaries (called Heroes for Young Readers) and they loved those as well. They are a little small in size for a class – but maybe you could all cuddle up close to read? They are a bit rhymy, but they really tell the story of the missionary well and don’t sugar coat it. My kids loved hearing about their adventures and the pictures aren’t ‘cartoony’ but realistic. Here is a link to the one on George Meuller:

My 4 year old likes Ian and the Gigantic Leafy Obstacle. I believe it’s on the Sonlight preschool list.

This is a great help, thank you! I saw they had a Lottie Moon book in that one series, and my daughter is named Lottey, I think I might get her that for Christmas! Ian and the Gigantic Leafy Obstable looks great, too!

We like Hero Tales, so I wanted to mention it even though I don’t think it’s quite what you’re looking for.  There are four volumes of Hero Tales.  Each book covers about ten or twelve missionaries.  There are three or four short chapters about each one with some questions at the end of each chapter.  It’s not a picture book, but a good reader or read-aloud.  My 9 and 12 yo read it independently.
