    What age do you start your evaluations?  I wanted to start this coming term (Jan-Apr) for dc 7 and 6.  I was going to explain it to them at the end of this term on Fri so they know what we’re working towards and to tell them about the “report card.”

    Thanks.

    I use them beginning in K or 1st grade when we formally start homeschooling. The Progress report is more for me as a check-up on how I’m doing getting the material to them via their books, how narration is going, etc.

    Christie – Do you have examples of these on your blog?  I think you’ve shared them before – I could really use some direction.

    Thanks!

    Here is what I put together. In all honesty, I found the lay out free online and I tweaked for my family. My children were in PS until March of this year. They are accustomed to getting report cards and both liked goiing over this and both agreed that it was accurate. It helps me to see the progress and keep track of things we need to work on and improve. I currently am doing 4 terms consisting of 9 weeks each. We take a week off after every 9 weeks and we take a week off for Thanksgiving and 2 weeks off for Christmas. So far so good. I will be switching next year to the 3 terms of 12 weeks. Anyway, HTH.

    Grading Scale: A=100-94, B=93-86, C=85-77, D=76-70, F= Below 70

    E=Excellent, G=Good, S=Satisfactory and N=Needs Improvement.

    I feel woefully inadequate.

    Just sayin’….

    @Mysterious – Charlotte graded character if anything. I do the same with my character report. The progress report is a checkup of how I’m doing and my kids never see it. I loathe traditional grades for the most part. I’m going for mastery so we work until we get there. I do NOT like traditional report cards nor do I personally find them useful to kids. No offense to those who like them. I just agree with Charlotte in this area.

    @Mysterious Lady in Pink.  Don’t feel that way.  Each of us is gifted differently.  These moms are lovingly sharing.  Tweak their ideas as needed, or just run with the very forms shared if this type of thing is necessary in your homeschool.  If it’s not needed, just enjoy learning about how others use their talents to bless their families and others.  None of us will do things the same way.  We will even do things differently for each child.  So, just rest knowing that God is the finisher.  We’re learning daily right along with our children.  So, this is just a learning opportunity.  Smile

    I’m so sorry if anything I posted made you feel that way because that truly was not my intention. I just know that I looked for a good while trying to find something that included character or habits and not just subjects. Wasn’t trying to boast or make anyone feel bad. Everyone is different. My children were asking for a report card so I had a bit of motivation in doing mine. I will say that it does help see the progress that kinda just slips up on you, but I only grade math and phonics for my daughter. So the other is more of a general assessment.

    Oh no! Please don’t misunderstand me — I LOVE the two example evaluations that were posted!! And so appreciate the willingness of those who shared, that others may glean from the idea and actual samples/examples (because often one without the other can leave me feeling a bit confused or lost).

    From my own experience I do totally see the value of evaulations as a form of accountability (and especially accountability to myself). And while it’s true that I do feel woefully inadequate, that is only because it rather overwhelms me to consider where I would have to honestly assess myself and my children on some of these aspects.

    I love this site and all of you here on this site — so encouraging, so many great ideas and examples. [And here is where I wrote several ridiculously long, rambiling paragraphs that no one else would likely care to read where I analyze my CM journey over the past 15 years, so I have deleted it out of courtesy to others. lol] The bottom line is this: my feelings of being woefully inadequate stem from the gulf between where I am and where I’ve been, between what is and what is possible.

    Excellent artilce, missceegee, and actually addresses some issues at the root of my “drift” over the years back a more utilitarian mindset. I really enjoyed his voice, as well. lol

    Thank you for sharing your evaluations!! I really DO appreciate it so much!

    My main goal with evaluations is to introduce to my children the concept of setting goals for yourself and the accountability of progress/no progress.  They are young so this will be a vey gentle introduction yet one I feel will open their eyes a bit.
