Hi Christie,
I remembered awhile back during some postings on reading and spelling skills you mentioned you were going to be starting Megawords with a few of your children – to help with spelling and decoding during reading (I think?). Just wondering how it’s going. I’ve often looked at Megawords as possibility to help DS10.5 and DS12 end the habit of word skipping during reading. They both spell decently (despite the fact that phonics instruction never really sank in), but, when it comes to reading, the default habit is simply to skip words they don’t know – they have just never seen words as a collection of syllables that they COULD tackle – so they skip and move on. The habit rarely seems to affect reading comprehension in a big way (i.e. Narrations independent readings are great, other discussions on books read are full of detail, with interesting comments and observations) but it still niggles at me that this habit exists! Soooo, I’ve often looked at Megawords as an option to help get them to actually decode and tackle unknown words, but have always put it on my “no” list because I’d heard that it only works “well” when the teacher is truly involved to reinforce concepts taught. With two littles here as well, I tend to lean to independent choices for my eldest boys…
Would love your thoughts, Christie. And comments from anyone else on Megawords most welcome, too!
Blessings, Angie
