I have been a RightStart fan for 5 years…..UNTIL we landed in G. Cry

I see three MAIN issues with this level/

It is very difficult to get through the lesson, as there are new concepts EACH day. I call RS hotline (very very helpful) several times a week. Am now on a first name basis with them, and theya re on auto dial.

Im not even sure that GEOEMTRY is the right math topic for sixth grade. What happened to math problems, fractions, percents, long division, multiplication? I don’t think they had enough practice in the end of E when these tropics were GENTLY INTRODUCED. Now, they SKIP to geometry?

And lastly, IF you can do a problem on the worksheet, there is only ONE problem in which to practice this DIFFICULT skill. I don’t know about you, but {I} have to practice things a few times beofre going onto something totally different. SO, even within one worksheet, IF there is more than one problem, the rest of the problems are totally different. The next day, MORE new material. My concern is, how are they LEARNING with only one shot at practice.

I am flustered, and I just can’t keep this up, spending so much TIME and effort and phone calls back and forth….multiple times a week! Especially if I am quesitoning if this math topic is even necessary at this point (LEVEL G in sixth?) and the lack of practice!

SOmeone Please help me…..I am drowning!Yell

    Hi Kelly,

My kids aren’t to this level yet – so take my advice with that grain of salt….

First question – are you on the RightStart User Group?

There has been discussion about the lack of some practice in Level E on the fractions etc – some of the people on the user group says that doing regular practice with the fraction games provides enough practice – and other people supplement with some other program.

As to if Geometry is really necessary – I know that in the RightStart videos, they say that for an older student that you can skip the Geometry level to go right into Algebra.  Now I’m NOT advising going into Algebra – just saying that maybe it isn’t that necessary…

I haven’t decided what we are going to do when we get there.  My oldest will be old enough to need to move right into Algebra.

So I’m not sure if I’ve helped.  Have you decided what you are going to do later for Algebra?  Maybe you will want to do whatever that program has for middle school level?

I am on the yahoo group. All I see is a lot of frustration. Not a ny real suggestions. I do know SCM suggests RS for most grades….not LEVEL E. Can’t remember why?

I found and started RS later w/ my dc.  I’ll admit I put it away for a spell but I’m pulling it out again in a week or so when youngest ds finishes the current work.  I had my 2nd ds in 8th, along w/ another student, doing the Geometry.  WOW!  It was TOUGH!  And, I had taken Calculus in college.  (Not saying a whole lot w/ that because I only had a ‘C’ but meaning I typically “get” math and concepts.)

There were enough times that I didn’t know or understand what they were doing or trying to do to help them.  Even looking at the answers was confusing at times.  And, it was frustrating when there was only the one page – and it was already used, reused, and rereused yet again, let alone the ones that you had to cut.  Needless to say, we barely made it through 40 lessons.  I finally put it up and had ds work on a more typical 8th gr/Pre-Alg text.

Hearing this is a little encouraging to me.  Unfortunately.
Ds had come back home after 7th at the ps and I was thinking it was because he lost so much knowledge.  Now I know it was more than that.

One option for you would probably get some basic worktexts/sheets, maybe that focus on specific types of problems your dc needs more practice in, and then you can take the Geoometry and spread it out over the next 2-3 yrs.  Take your time w/ it.  (If you still want to use it.)

If you’re needing fraction practice, the Key to Fractions are highly recommended.  There are others, too.  MUS has a worksheet generator on their site that you could use for a specific level for some practice on what he’s needing.  Or, there are other online generators for extra practice.

Oh, do you have the Game book from RS?  Maybe use more of those in between the Geometry.

I’m sorry I don’t have any more suggestions….  As I said, I’m not sure what my plan is going to be…  My 5th and 3rd grader are currently in Level D.

    Following this.

We are at the end of level C. It is my understanding that level G is to be worked along with a pre-algebra course, spending 2 years on both and that the student should work independently, calling or e-mailing RS themselves with any questions. I am on the RS Yahoo group. The recent discussion on lack of fractions practice has me concerned. I know we will also be using Life of Fred fractions and now I know to plan on lots of fraction games. I was planning to use level G, but not sure now.

I like(d) the challenge of G, but just not for each and every day.  I would mix it up w/ something else and either have the download cd for printing out extra pages or an extra worktext in case.  Also, being aware of the challenge gives me a heads up for some dc.

    Kelly,

I’ve just come across this post as I’ve been feeling the exact same things about level G for my sixth grade daughter.  She went from liking math to hating it.  What did you end up doing?  Would you be able to let me know what changes you’ve made and how you like your new math program?  Thank you so much.

    Elaine:
Well, I have 6 kids, and my first has been (painfully) working through the Videotext and Geometry suggested rotation. I have decided to sell the G materials. It is just not worth all the time and phone calls to RightStart and hours she has to work with Daddy (as I can NOT help her). My next daughter will finish E this year. I will have her do Math U See Elsilom, as it is solid fractions teaching (which was lacking in level E, IMO and from the Yahoo RS group). Video Text seems to be good. Was going to look into Lial’s (something, forgot the name) as it is mentioned a lot on the forum. Hope this helps. LMK if you have any other questions. This was a tough two years.
