I used Rod and Staff Math last year with my 10, 8, and 6 year old. I thought it was a good program but of course it is all workbook based. I was looking to do something different but really wanted to get math facts memorized. I was looking at Miquon to use as I move into LOF with them. Would this be good for getting kids going on math facts? in the reviews i read it seems that people don’t really know what math to do when they have completed the last miquon book. It also seems that they don’t recommend it as a stand alone program. Could I get opinions from any of you that have used it or are currently using it. I like the cost factor!
Miquon is VERY different but I did have a friend who used it as a stand alone program. I was never brave enough. But it does teach a lot! It definitely isn’t your typical fact memorizing program but as the student works through the exercises the facts are very likely to be absorbed automatically.
I have said before that I love the combo of Miquon and Fred. I think it is the perfect combination for early math. As you go through Fred, you will be learning math facts slowly. This would be a good time to put them to memorization. For instance, in the first book, you are learning every combo that adds up the 7. In the second book, it is 9. If I were starting over, I would have been more diligent to have my 6 year old work on memorizing those facts as we went. I would have had her make her own flash cards. If we had done them every day in a gentle manner, I believe she would have those facts memorized by now. I would do the 7 family with the first book, the 9 family with the second book, etc. But, obviously, we did not do that. My older ones have memorized their facts the old fashioned ways – copywork, flashcards, flashcard-type math games. After Miquon, the kids will move into the Strayer Upton books that the other ones are doing. They will continue with Fred as well.
pslively, I actually was looking through the forum last night after I made this post and found your comments on LOF and Miquon. I am glad to hear more of how you would have used them. I think this is the path I will go. Thanks so much.
