Hello there! I am new to this wonderful site, although not new to CM. What a lovely group of folks I have found here, I suspect there are many kindred spirits among us! We are an army family of five. I was wondering if there are any other military families here? If so, what have been your experiences with moving, deployment and CM learning? Also, one of our children is on the autism spectrum, very high functioning (most likely Asperger’s) and I wondered if anyone else here is going through similar circumstances? Would love to hear your family tales of what worked, what didn’t and any other tid-bits of wisdom! Thanks so much!

Hi! I am military also. My husband is stationed at Fort Hood. Fortunately when my husband was deployed to Iraq I stayed with my parents during the 15 month long deployment. My parents live in the woods so we basically had the most enriching nature experiences which is mostly what Charlotte Mason discusses in her books. My child was 3 when he left. Now we are at fort hood. As far as CM learning, I recently bought her books and am slowly making myself read through them. I read bloggers who are also using Charlotte Mason.

Glad to meet you! We are south of you (San Antonio). I hope your husband is safe back with you now! It sounds like you had a great time being surrounded by nature while he was deployed, I love the emphasis CM put on nature study, it is already such a basic part of being human (relating to God’s creation). I miss the opportunities we had in Oregon and California (beach, mountains, gardens galore), San Antonio is definitely natural-beauty deprived. Atleast, the kind of natural beauty I like (greenery)! Oh well, we need to bloom where we’re planted, even if there is very little water:) Anyway, I am digressing, I am glad to meet you here and I look forward to getting to know you better as we learn and glean from one another along the way!

It’s wonderful meeting you too! Since you are in San Antonio, some beautiful parks you might be interested in are Garner State park (I actually saw a blue river here) and Lost Maples. They are absolutely a beautiful way to show your child some nature. Our daughter absolutely loved those parks. It is great meeting other military moms who are homeschooling there kids. It is difficult for me to find those that utilize CM though. I grew up God’s world and all that is offers. I love CM because she believes that the best way to teach a child is by first introducing them to the natural world. This of course is completely lacking in today’s public schools. If you have any tips on nature ideas for 4 year olds, I would love to hear it!

    Thanks and God Bless

Thank you for the info on those two parks! We haven’t lived here too long and hadn’t heard of them yet, we will definitely check them out! Thanks!

    hi there

we have the autism but not military…

DS is 7 yo and ‘kind of’ fits autism….he is high function- more on the hyper side- but definately social issues. (He was trying to kiss a girl yesterday to turn her into a princess..on the way home he did ask if it was rude to try and kiss someone.) we are new to CM but it fits in so many ways. There is a great article in Childlight – Winter Review- i think…that talks about scaffolding learning. Most excellent reading for the special needs person. And have you seen Tammy’s blog.. http://aut2bhomeincarolina.blogspot.com/ She is NOT a CM newbie… and has excellent ideas. You probably have already been on there;)

i also blog on it… my old blog is.. http://rdisuperparents.blogspot.com/ and i have some CM / AI stuff on there that has worked for us. (look on the sidebar for CM). I just started my new blog http://www.growing-fruit.blogspot.com/. NOt much on there but working on a post that has been very useful to me- on how to scaffold narrating- again based off a wonderful article in the Summer Review on Childlight. but again I am new to this so the blog is really my own way of narrating for myself what I read!

I am also going thru the blog posts on this website on planning. i think it is like a peek for the new planning book which i haven’t purchased yet- but it is helpful to go thru and generally plan just like for any kiddo but the goals may be a bit different.

Hi Amy, thanks for sharing some of your experiences! It is so nice to connect with folks (even through virtual means) who understand the complexities of having a child with autism. Our middle child (dd) is 5 years old and she is definitely on the high functioning end of the spectrum. Right now we are mostly working on communication skills. She is quite verbal, but has some speech quirks that need to be corrected before they become a “rut”. I’m sure you know well that once a “rut” starts with ASD it is painstakingly difficult to “un-rut” it(rigid adherence)! Thanks for recommending all the blogs, I will definitely peruse them! I will also read the article on scaffold-learning, something I have never even hear of! Thanks, and best wishes to you and your family!
