I am homeschooling a 12 yo with dyslexia and dysgraphia. I am trying to decide on a reasonable TIME limit to expect him to work on putting words on paper on a daily basis. He is doing oral narrations across the curriculum on a daily basis. I am not concerned about the volume of writing, but really want to determine an appropriate amount of time to have him work on getting words on paper.

How much time does your middle schooler spend working on written narration? How often?

    Thanks for your help!

I have a Writing Skills series (link to follow) on my future curriculum list after seeing it recommended in the resource section of the book The Dyslexic Advantage. I do not recall the details as to why it was recommended, but would highly recommend reading the book. I had borrowed it from the library, but plan to purchase my own copy. Here is a link to Writing Skills, book 1: http://www.christianbook.com/writing-skills-2nd-edition-book-grades/diana-king/9780838825655/pd/379256

There are two more books in the series. But the third book says it is for highschool level. I have also seen folks in a dyslexia group recommend IEW. So that gives you a couple of things to have a look at.

    Thanks for the link!

What I’m trying to determine is how much time a neuro-typical CM middle schooler spends putting pen to paper in their typical school day.

He has long and eloquent oral narrations, but will put the absolute fewest words possible down on paper. So asking him to write a narration isn’t working. Written narrations are resulting in a significant decrease in the use of quality words and complex sentence structure.

I would like to be able to tell him that his peers spend X minutes working on a written narration and when that time limit is up that I will step in and take over the physical aspects of writing so that he can complete the narration on paper. Having him finish a narration isn’t working because he will write the shortest sentence possible that completes the narration.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a middle schooler learning to write narrations and cannot remember how much time  they spend working on this daily.

When my 11.5 year old works on a written narration, he spends 20-30 minutes on it, but we don’t do written narrations on a daily basis.

My dd13 spends 20-40 minutes at least 3 days per week.

Thanks for the feedback! I will start him with a 20 minute time limit and gradually increase the time.
