My son has not enjoyed reading The World of Columbus and Sons by Genevieve Foster. He finds the chapters too short and choppy. He says it jumps around too much. He is in 5th grade and the study handbook has 4th-6th graders using this book for most of terms 2 and 3. Has anyone else had this problem? What books can I have him read instead? We have enjoyed learning about the Renaissance and Reformation, but he really does not like this book. He does enjoy good living books.
Thanks for the suggestion. I wish there were more living book suggestions in the guide. The ones included in the guide are under the section for the whole family, which we read together as a family. There is nothing additional listed for reading on his own (4-6th grade) except for the Genevieve Foster book. Any suggestions for more living books for this time period would be appreciated.
I am not sure if you are looking specifically for another book about Columbus or just that time frame…
Look at the Heritage History site under British Middle Ages, Early American, Spanish Empire or Christian Europe. They all have different books listed for these areas, but all are covering a lot of the same times… All of the resources at HH are living books and they are divided into the various types of books as well.
All Through the Ages lists for 4-6th grade (specifically the Columbus books, there are others listed as well):
Voyages of Columbus by John D. Clare
I, Columbus: My Journal 1492-93 by Peter and Connie Roop (text from Columbus’ own journal)
Voyages of Christopher Columbus by Armstrong Perry
Columbus and the Renaissance Explorers by Colin Hynson
Columbus: Finder of the New World by Ronald Syme
Christopher Columbus by Bennie Rhodes
True Story of Christopher Columbus by Elbridge S. Brooks (non-politically correct) – that’s the direct quote!
The SCM guides are excellent for incorporating history, geography and Bible into a do-able schedule to help you cover those subjects. However, there are some voracious readers in my house and I like their reading to complement our other studies. I needed more ideas for living books, so we use the Truthquest guides for more book suggestions.
I’ve also used Sarah Clarkson’s book “Read for the Heart: Whole Books for WholeHearted Families” for time period suggestions. Wonderful resource all around!
I have a bit more time this morning, so I’ve pulled out my Middle Ages list to give you some more ideas. I’ve tried to only list the books that would be good for your son’s age:
Viking Adventure
Leif the Lucky
The Man Who Loved Books
Augustine Came to Kent
Son of Charlemagne
Minstrel in the Tower
Black Fox of Lorne
Robin Hood
Red Keep
Adam of the Road
The Apple and the Arrow
Morning Star of the Reformation
I loved the book Trial and Triumph as well. It has short biographies of Christian leaders beginning with the early church and continuing through modern times. I consider it a must-have book. The book Beggar’s, Beasts and Easter Fire is similar, but written for much younger children.
Also, we listened to Our Island Story on Librivox and really enjoyed that as well. There is also a series put out by Westminster that is wonderful — it is History Lives series. Here is a link:
Thanks Ladies! There are a few new books that I want to check out from your lists. I haven’t had the chance to look at them all, but I did look at the History Lives series and those look great!
Don’t forget the Henty books which are free on Kindle. Here’s the list of books from the Middle Ages:
THE MIDDLE AGES
870 The Dragon and the Raven 1066 Wulf the Saxon 1190 Winning His Spurs 1314 In Freedom’s Cause 1340 St. George for England 1380 The Lion of St. Mark 1381 A March on London 1400 Both Sides of the Border 1415 At Agincourt 1480 A Knight of the White Cross
Reformation & Exploration

You might also look into My Audio School for some books for the ears – some of them may have been mentioned on the list. I found an OTR recording of You Are There! for the time period which we will use. Dh and I were quite hooked when listening to it. 🙂 It is conceivable that there are more OTR YAT! recordings for the period as well, but I’ve not spent time looking for them as yet.
blue j-if you have time can you link me to the free version of The Dragon and the Raven on kindle. I was only able to find a few of those for free on kindle. Thanks
To find any of Henty’s books on Amazon, start typing Henty into the search bar. It should automatically pop up with Henty books in Kindle. Click that and it will take you right to pages full of Henty’s works for the Kindle.
If you have a Kindle Fire that does not have the voice capabilities, you can find some of Henty’s books in audio format here. The above title is one which is in audio format.
