I have a CD of the King’s Singers singing English madrigals of later Middle Ages/ Ren & Ref that we listen to……also an album of lute and guitar music from that period (it’s one of those CDs from way back when I was in some BMG club or something where they mailed a CD every month.)
I don’t have any actual living books (more than Adam of the Road, which features Adam and his lute) that deal with music, though.
The Links & Tips page for the Middle Ages/Renaissance lesson plans has a link to a Gregorian chant, along with some other activity ideas that might be helpful.
This last semester our CM learning community studied the music of Hildegard Von Bingen, a 12th century nun who was also a famous composer in her own time. We listened to selections from”The Origin of Fire,” a CD I bought on Amazon. Beautiful, haunting, and even “elvish” were adjectives the kids frequently used when discussing the pieces. You can find more information about Hildegard, and find links to some of her songs on YouTube through Ambleside online.
Thanks Rachel! I downloaded a free Pandora app on the Kindle Fire. It is on Dish satellite too. Great that it is free and good for variety. There are also channels for medieval, Gregorian chant, and Bach.
The Boston Camerata, directed by Joel Cohen – A Renaissance Christmas; A Medieval Christmas.
All at once well met: English Madrigals by the King’s Singers.
Those are the 3 CDs I could find – I don’t know exactly where my lute CD is……(I sort of collect CDs like I collect books – and I have a bad habit of lending them without keeping track of them ?)
