This year we are doing the SCM middle ages guide and I love it so far. There is one thing I am struggling with a bit…I want to read all the books aloud. I am reading the 1-3 books to my 3rd grader of course. My 6th grader wants me to read hers with her (these dont tempt me as much). But my 8th graders books, I soooooo want to read these with him. I have been reading ahead of him and each book is so good I think it would be so fun to read aloud. But he is nearing high school and I dont want to baby him. If we do his history books as family read alouds will this be a detriment to him? I am quite certain I will feel the same way about Early Modern and Modern, what do I do. At this point, as far as independent reading, he is doing Bible, science and history, oh and Life of Fred. If I take over history should I give him something else to read? I have also had him reading the Famous Men assignments, but that is just two days a week. Should I start prepping him for “literature” by getting some lit guides for him to work through, or focus more on writing. I dont want to enable laziness (he doesnt need help being lazy), or make college impossible because I have read so much to him. He is not a read for fun kind of guy so free reading is out of the question, it has to be assigned. Maybe a very challenging classic with a lit guide to work through slowly. Or should I suck it up and leave him alone with his history. Any ideas?
