I just did a week’s worth of comparing these two! I spent one hour in the library this week reading thru the book lists and realistically comparing these programs for my family. This is totally just my opinon, but SCM is much easier to actually USE than MFW. I ended up tweaking and retweaking and skipping and adding to MFW until it was no longer the program for which I had paid a pretty penny. 😉 SCM is much better at helping a family of many age ranges get the most out of their combined studies, too. I also like the book choices for SCM MUCH better than MFW. Many of the MFW books are Usborne types that my kids do not really enjoy.
I believe your question about college acceptance could be answered and fulfilled by both programs you have asked about. The thing you might want to do is look up any college that you are thinking of attending someday and find out what their requirements are for acceptance in their program. You could check into a few different colleges. They are all about the same. They will want i.e. 4 English, 4 math, 2 foreign language, 3-4 science, etc. After you have done this, you take any program that you will be using and figure out how the program fulfills those requirements or how you can tweak it to fulfill those requirements.
We, in our family, are MFW users. We have used pretty much the whole program from ECC through highschool World History. Yes, we have tweaked here and there. I love SCM but I needed a guide. I like having something to follow and then choosing if I want to read a certain book or not rather than choosing it all. The SCM guides were not available until later in our journey so I just stuck to our path. My son has been accepted to colleges with high scholarships and I am so thankful for that.
Both programs will accomplish all you need. Be sure to keep track of all you do and write course descriptions with the book titles you use.
