I have read the prior posts here about MFW and it seems that most families used it for the younger years. Anybody here doing MFW Ancients or MFW for the the later high school years or have prior experience with that? We are set on doing SCM Mods 1-3 with the 1st-7th graders, but I’m torn about whether to put oldest daughter (starting 9th), in MFW for the ancients or have her stay with the younger ones doing the SCM Ancient mods….
My thought was that if she did MFW Ancients we would all still be on the same time period and there would still be good family discussions.
She is very bright and loves to write. I don’t want to overload her and stress her out, yet want to make sure she is doing college prep study in case she ends up going that route.
I am switching from MFW to SCM and my oldest will be in 9th grade this coming year. I really, really debated having her do MFW AHL. I think their program looks very well organized and I think the company is great.
My plan however, is to do Module 1 with all my children this year including my highschooler. Many factors played into this. I really love how Bible and History integrate with SCM. I also work and have 2 of my 4 children with special learning needs. I need to combine kids where I can to save my sanity. Also, my oldest is not ready for that type of independance in her schoolwork. All those factors played into our decision.
Is there a reason you are doing 3 modules in one year with your youngers? I believe MFW HS includes rome in year 2. So, if you wanted to stay on similar topics, you could do Mod 1 &2 this year and 3&4 next year while your oldest did MFW.
You are right Pink, I meant to say 1 and 2 modules because of how MFW AHL ends before Rome. Then she could rejoin us if she didn’t like her year doing MFW Ancients and we would still be on the same period.
How many years have you done MFW? I have heard great things about the program for 9th… We also have a little one with special needs, but I actually thought having her own her own more would free me up to work with him more.
Yes, MFW includes bible, history, and English into their high school program. We used MFW ECC when we started homeschooling a year ago. I was all set to use the next program CTG for this past school year, but changed my mind after I ordered the materials. I really was having such a hard time because I wanted all my children to have as much as possible together and MFW high school didn’t meet that need. So we turned to SCM and I’m very happy we did. This year I haven’t gotten my plan all made out yet for the coming school year, but I will definitely be keeping our history and bible together as a family (and anything else that is possible too). I just think it keeps us knitted together and better focused on meeting the goals we’re trying to accomplish with our homeschool.
Not that I’ve really helped you in your decision making, but this has been my thought process and from the other thread you know my DD is starting 9th grade this fall. I really hate that she’s already to high school. There is so I feel like I’d like to cover in four short years. If only I would have started hs’ing from the beginning. But I can’t look in the rear view mirror, can I? Just have to keep moving forward and making the best decisions I can, with the help of God of course.
Joyful…I used MFW for 2 years. We did 1850-mod and ECC. They do have Bible included in their courses. We actually are doing our own thing for Bible…that was one of the drawbacks for me in purchasing AHL. I felt like I wouldn’t be using 1/3 of the program that I was paying for. I also felt like Melissa…I wanted to keep my family studying Bible and history together.
I think so much of the decision depends on your goal for homeschooling and the personality of your child. If my dd thrived on working independantly, I may have chosen the other option.
Thank you ladies~~still in the throes of deciding here! And she threw in a new twist for me telling me she really, really would rather start with MFW WHL the 10th grade program, before the Ancients.
So more to mull over, but I wanted to let you know that I do very much appreciated hearing from you on this.:-)
