Can someone help me understand how MEP math years correspond to US years, roughly? I’ve read that Reception is more like Preschool, but then I read that it’s perfect for a CM Kindergarten program.
I also see in various blog posts that if the child moves through MEP and completes Yr 6 then they are ready for high school math … would that be Algebra in 9th, or Geometry, or what next? What does ready for high school look like?
I started using MEP back in August and took a break around Thanksgiving, but we’re getting back to it with LOF and I’m trying to get my bearings on if we’re in the right “spot” and if we’re headed in the right direction.

In the UK, my understanding is that a child in a Kindergarten-age 4 would do Reception. Their Year 1 in school is for 5yo’s, so that is Year 1 MEP math for 5yo’s. That said, I think that Reception goes well for a US K year, and Year 1 MEP is good for Grade 1, etc. MEP is challenging.
If you complete MEP year 6, with the child fully understanding and doing very well with it, they should be ready for Algebra. However, if they are having a hard time with it, even though they complete it – you would want to look at MEP years 7-9 which is more of a pre-algebra, middle school type program. (MEP Years 7-9 are not a direct continuation of MEP Years 1-6…. I’ve heard that MEP Year 7 is a similar difficulty as MEP Year 4 or 5….)
BTW – as far as if you are at the right “spot” or not – the only right “spot” is where the student is challenged, but not too much – and is learning.

Thank you. I am a member of the group and after I posted thought to look in the files section. I found a lot of great information. My second oldest is 6, turning 7 next month, but I consider her Kindergarten even though she’s doing much more advanced work, but she’s still only 6 and silly and little. She whizzed through Year 1, until we took a break, and now we’re back, so we’ll see when she plateaus. My oldest turned 9 in late November, 3rd grade, and she’s half way through Year 2. It stretches her but does not bring her to tears. 🙂

I can’t find it on the MEP site now, but a few months ago I think I read a grade level comparison for the material for UK and Hungary. What I remember is like suzukimom said, in the UK they start reception in pre-k and year 1 in K. But, right next to it I read that Hungary started reception for the K year and year 1 in 1st grade. I wish I could find the link, it was somewhere on the cimt site. I agree with the right spot Suzukimom mentioned. I started 6yo ds on year 2 , like AO has recommended for year 1 of their program. It was taking 2 days to do each lesson. I backed him up to midway through year 1a, and that was perfect, us completing an average of 1 lesson per day in about 25-30 minutes. If I find the link I mentioned, I’ll post it, I remember thinking I should have bookmarked in case this question ever came up, because I was doing MEP for awhile before I saw it.

Not to confuse, but in saying UK does year 1 in K, I mean their K is called year 1 instead of K.

Thank you … makes perfect sense. I think I found a chart you are referring to on the Yahoo group, probably taken from the cimt site as well.
I have a little boy from Ethiopia, whose English is very behind, and whose age we are trying to adjust with the courts. We’re using AO Yr0 with him and I think I’ll start Reception, too. He’s 7 on paper but probably more like 5 or 6.
If you do find the link I’d love to see it, just in case it’s different from what I saw.

Erin.kate, I couldn’t find the link I wanted, it is slightly different than the files of the MEP yahoo group. Both state the years that UK start reception 4 years old, but the link from MEP direct site compared Hungary and UK levels for the program, vs. US/UK age placement suggestions. The closet I found was the above link that states the reception year was developed for kindergarten in Hungary (age 5+), and there’s a sentence at the end of a paragraph that states UK begins this level one year sooner. It’s not that matters if reception starts at 4, 5, or 6 but it matters that each child is placed at his or her ability level, IMHO.

Thank you so much for taking the time today. Looks like I’m all set with three of my four kids in MEP Reception, Year 1, and Year 2. My baby is only 4.
