When doing mental math do you allow the child to write out the problem to solve it?  Some of the problems I use have multiple numbers to be added or subtracted or multiple steps such as multiply then subtract.  Should all of this be done in thier heads?  Or do you allow them to write down the numbers but they must solve the problem in thier head?

If it’s called mental math it should be done in their heads. Hence the term, mental! If it’s a multi-step problem, I will read one bit at a time so DS can calculate that part before reading the next part to him. This seems to help.
