I’m having trouble figuring out a good way to handle memory work for my almost 6 YO DS.  We are currently working through James 2 a little at a time.  He memorized James 1 last year and I’d like to keep reviewing it with him but am having trouble figuring out a good way to do it.  I’ve tried the rotating system on the website (the even days, odd days, days of the week, etc one) but because it’s such a big chunk and we haven’t done that before I can’t figure out a way to have him repeat it often enough to actually help him retain it.

You just let him work on it to mastery. Then you add a new verse and move the mastered one to the next tab. Don’t make him feel pressured by time constraints to have it memorized by a certain date. Just let him work at his own pace. He will be able to memorize quicker and longer verses with age.

Also, if he is writing, use your verse of the week (or of the moment) as part of his copywork. Some kids learn better with something tactile so, writing the verse out big, cutting the words and scrambling them up, might prove to be a fun way to memorize the verse. Or, possibly looking up hand/arm motions to go with it. My daughter loved learning verses that way when she was of preschool age. Now, she just does it. She will be 7 tomorrow. She amazes me at how quickly she memorizes new verses. When we review older ones, I often have to start the first 2-3 words but then she remembers.

Is your child doing copy work?  If so, the SCM Copybook Readers are really nice for this.  I have my son read through once a day what he has copied so far.  (He copies a page per day.)  Then by the time he has fisnished copying that passage, he usually has it memorized.  The Copybook Readers are not Scripture only but you could use a similar method on your own.

    HTH!

I agree with the others to implement it into his copywork, if he does that.  There are places online that you can create a handwriting worksheet with your own words.

Besides that, though, I would just move on to other shorter passages, but continue to read James 2 to him several times a week (as done in the Scripture Memory System).  Don’t necessarily have him try to recite it to you all the time.  My kids seem to retain better when they are reciting along silently (in their own minds) while I read it aloud.

I’ve never been any good at creative crafts, games, songs, or hand motions, but if you are creative in that way, those things can help, too.  Once we tried to set the parable of the mustard seed to a silly rap.  The kids remember that passage so well.  LOL.  When it comes to games like that, though, I have a specific friend I have to consult because she is much more creative than I am.
