I’ve used the SCM Memory System for a couple of years now and have been deciding on how to add my 2nd child into the equation. I combined their cards together! I posted about it at http://livinglifebetweenthetrees.blogspot.com if anyone’s interested.
If anyone else has suggestions, I’d love to hear them. You know, nothing is rarely set in stone!
We’ve always kept the Scripture Memory box a “family affair.” As younger siblings came along, they just listened every morning and joined in as they learned the verses. It seems like those younger ones can memorize so quickly! So they would get up to speed with no problem. And like you said in your post, if they just sit and listen to the Word every day, that’s great too! (That’s where my youngest one is at this point. I try to encourage her to join in — without pressuring her — but she sweetly replies that she would like to sit and listen. That’s okay!)
I’m sure you’ve already thought of this, Melissa, and are watching it carefully, but for anybody else reading this, I like to encourage everyone to be careful about fostering an attitude of competition in Scripture memory. One reason we keep the same verses for everybody to memorize in our family together is to reinforce the character traits of encouragement, cooperation, and unity. Friendly competition can be very motivating, but we must make sure it doesn’t slide down the slippery slope into attitudes of pride or unkindness. (OK, I’m getting off my soapbox now. 😉 )
