I purchased a couple of these books from Amazon this summer. I got the Second Eclectic Reader and the Eclectic Third Reader, not noticing that the titles are worded differently. So I had my 4th grader bring up Easy Peasy’s English and it says to read lessons 1-5 from the third eclectic reader and I told him he could read it online or from the book and he chose the book so we opened it and it was different! I am bummed that I did not know about this. He can read it online but that isn’t the point. Does anyone know why there are two different sets?
The McGuffey Reader set has been totally changed about 3 times over the 100+ years of being in use. The first edition had a lot of religious content that was taken out and replaced… and I think that even more was replaced as the years went by
Yes, we just purchased a revised set, McGruffy Christian school edition, 1974. This set is fairly old. As Dr Robinson from Robinson curriculum says, you have to purchased the older books because most updated versions have been rewritten as “politically correct”.
I tripple checked the information when I was ordering off Amazon. I had started out using the free one off Project Gutenburg, but then found out through reading a couple of different sites that they had been revised several times since they were originally published. Mott Media sells a remake of the original version. It has all the references to God and I can see how some would change a few stories about how the children were naughty with todays enthusiasm for not exposing children to “hurtful or scarry” ideas.
