How many here rely solely on the McGuffey readers and/or speller? If so, how do you use them? Which edition do you use? We’re having great luck so far with the revised Eclectic Primer and teaching DD to read. However I’mllooking ahead to grade 4 with my son, adding in Spelling and perhaps more formal reading work.

Our 9 y.o. daughter uses the 2nd and 3rd grade primers each day, she’s in 3rd grade. She read to her brother(7) and then she reads 1 lesson from the 3rd grade primer. We go over the words together before the lesson. If there are numbers with the lessons, we each take turns reading every other number and when the lesson is over, I reread the passage while she tracks it for me. This has worked well for us and I may talk once /twice a week about some grammar within the lesson. Today was the first time she ever fully did a written narration all herself. Usually, I take her narration down and turn it into her copywork for the next day in cursive. She is very deliberate and methodical and I can’t rush her in her studies. Not that I should, but she is always the last finished, not out of slacking, but out of caring what her work looks like.

I asked God for His guidance with teaching her reading and that was the plan he gave me. We have not used any reading programs, nor phonics teachings. Just a lot of read alouds, and reading together in our Bibles, or free reading times. I hope this blesses you. Martha
