I am hoping someone here has an idea for me.  My 4yo, though she wears Pullups at night, leaked a few times this week, made her bed, and didn’t tell me…  So last night when I went to get her ready for bed, YIKES!  This mattress is brand new (less than 3 months old).  Is there a way to get the smell out without having to get a new one?  Please tell me there is….  And then tell me where to get those plastic/rubber mattress protectors…  😉

    Thanks,

    Sara  🙂

A paste of borax and water works pretty well, rubbed in, left to dry, then vacuumed.  There are a range of mattress protectors – from Walmart cheapies to specialty store items – it depends what you’re looking for.  We have a couple of nice ones, I’ll try and remember where they came from.

We had a similar problem a while back – I used white vinegar – I put some in a cup and used a toothbrush to scrub around the “ring” and it took out the stain and the smell. As far as mattress protectors go – I have on all of our mattresses a waterproof protector that is like a giant pillowcase that zips up – then on top of that a padded mattress pad (so no one feels like they are sleeping on a garbage bag). Then when there is an accident, I only have to pull off the pad and don’t have to worry about things seeping through. I was able to find all of these things at Wal-Mart, my mom picked some up for me a different time at either Target or Bed Bath and Beyond. HTH!

    Here’s a good link:

One tip I just read, that I never thought of, was to cut a garbage bage and lay it on the mattress with a towel or two on top.  It wouldn’t be luxurious, but it would work in a pinch.

We have a mattress protector that is more of a vinyl liner. It is soft cotton on top of that. It does not feel like a garbage bag. AIt has held up really well, too. It goes on just like a fitted sheet. I got it at Fred Meyer. I would think Target or Walmart type of stores would have them.

I have heard the pet urine spray works well for that sort of thing, too.

Thanks, all!  I will try your suggestions, and I’m headed to Walmart and Target tomorrow anyway.  Good timing, I guess.  😉
