My DS8.5 and DS10 could benefit from some extra work on math word problems. I’ve heard there are great supplemental resources (workbooks) in this area, but there are so many on the market, I have no idea how to narrow it down. I’d love to hear what your favourite math problem workbook is, and how often you assign it.
We would focus mostly on addition, subtraction and multiplication at this stage for my boys.
We haven’t used them yet, but I have the first two Life of Fred books that I think will be a good supplement to our math program. Many here have used LOF, so I’m sure someone else can give you more information on those books.
I did use Singapore’s Challenging Word Problems (we’ve been using Math Mammoth and Life of Fred) and thought that there were some pretty good questions in there — problems that required multiple steps of thinking, which was what I wanted.
But I haven’t looked at other things so not a lot to compare. I will be listening to hear other suggestions!
Thanks for the suggestions on Life of Fred, Singapore Challenging Word Problems and dadsworksheets. I will start by looking more closely at each of these. The Singapore book is probably what I had in mind as it’s a workbook format. Very easy to grab and assign when I need do.
I had not considered Life of Fred for this purpose as I’d always thought of it more as a curriculum in and of itself. (though I’ve heard often that LOF is great for “real life math” thinking…probably I should have made the connection)
If anyone else thinks LOF would fit the bill (or NOT) on my objective, could you chime in here? What level of LOF would you begin with for an 8.5 and 10 year old, where I want the skill focus at this time to be addition, subtraction and multiplication?
Thanks! Will have to look into Ray’s, too. Robin and missceegee, do you love it for word problems specifically (and how it teaches word problems?) or do you just love it in general? I have never seen it, not sure if it’s easily available in Canada but I will dig into this option — thanks again 🙂
