I just received math u see today. This is our first year trying it and it looks so much different than any math I’ve done. I knew it was different but when I looked to the back of Alpha and saw the different way he teaches subtraction (12-4 for example) it looks so strange. I am just wondering if I made a mistake by ordering a math that’s so different. The kids are so excited about the manipulatives. Does this approach actually work? It seems a little more complicated. I ordered Primer for my PreK (not sure when I will start her) and Alpha for my firsty.
It works. Like anything, it is not necessarily a good fit for every child or every family, but our family has done well with it. I have graduated one who struggled with higher math. She did just fine with MUS up until pre-algebra. That was a bit tougher for her, and algebra the year after that had her in tears. We ended up switching to Teaching Textbooks for algebra, but she did end up taking MUS’s Stewardship course later on and did fine with that.
My dd16, who is a junior this year, has used MUS all the way through geometry and will be taking algebra 2 with MUS this year. She is good at math, and she is now to the point where she does most of her math completely independently. If she doesn’t quite get something, she watches the dvd lesson again or refers to the instruction book for that chapter, rather than wait for me to go through it with her.
We did not start using MUS until a little later in elementary grades, so I don’t really know what Primer and Alpha are like, but I can attest to the fact that both of my girls learned math just fine with MUS.
