We are having a hard time with adding nines…or the nine addition family ( which ever way you want to say it).  We  use Saxon 2nd grade math and it has them making the 9 a ten and then subtracting one. Example: for 2+9=  you say, I know that 2+10=12 so 2+9= is one less or 11.

My son was able to add tens but then when we started doing the nines it is like his mind shuts down. I know that we should master each level before moving on (I don’t think Saxon is a mastery program though) but what do I do now? He had been able to do tens but now has forgotten. And if he sees 70+10= he does not even try to figure it out. He is getting so frustrated that he automatically closes his mind when I get out the math book. He has started saying “I can’t do this” before we even begin.

For  adding single-digit numbers to nines, we use the stategy, “whatever you are adding to the nine, count back one and say ‘teen’.” So, 9+8= 7-teen. The 1, 2 and 3, come naturally because the child knows we say, ‘ten, eleven, twelve.’ You may want to consider using lots of manipulatives, asking for at least one proof daily, and continuing to move on with plenty of review. Do you allow some computer drill? I am no expert; I think there are lots of moms here that will have some good ideas for you.

What do you mean by computer drill? 😉

My son had a hard time with 9’s also. When I tried to explain to him ‘make the 9 a 10 and then subtract 1’, he was sorely confused- too many different processes going on in his mind at once I guess.

However, we purchased Math-It by Elmer Brooks and he taught adding 9’s the way Cindy suggested. Doing it this way clicked for my son and he never had a problem adding 9’s after that!

Okay, I’ll try that way of thinking about it and see how he reacts to it 🙂

Math facts on the computer. You can find some online for free; or there are lots of programs. There is one very popular one but I’m pulling a blank on the name right now.

Woopee! It worked! He did all his nines today using the “Math It” way that you guys suggested! What a relief to him and me!  Thanks so much for the help!!

I also forgot to mention this…. he has to literally run in a circle or spin in circles when we do oral math or anything that he has to really work at mentally. I know that this has something to do with the way his mind works, but can anyone share what you call that???? If I make him sit down he moves his whole upper body in circles…..for a while I tried to make him sit still, but now I tell him to spin.

Yay Amanda!! I’m ‘woopin’ it up with you and your son!! Laughing

My middle son use to like to bounce on his hop-ball while reciting math facts. One day I decided to join him – what fun!  Aren’t you glad we homeschool? Laughing

Have fun and God Bless! Heather
